None of my "black midgets" are black. They are red and one is grayish. Not sure how they came up with that name.

Very nice pictures! That "black midget" is actually an indian whitebanded shrimp. You already have a picture of that species above and correctly concluded that it may be an indian whitebanded. Unfortunately, only females are shipped *most* of the time. Those are the ones with the nice white bands whereas the males have none or very faint bands. When you order shrimp from importers or people who sell wild shrimp you won't always get the same species when you order under the same name (e.g. "black midget shrimp"). Exporters mix and match several species and send whatever they may have at hand under the same name. So, you may get an indian whitebanded shrimp under "black midget", rainbow or "whiteback" shrimp. But you may also get other species under those names. It's the luck of the draw. Very nice bumblebees by the way. You can do the same kind of selective breeding with these guys as is done with the bee and crystal red shrimp. Many of the young will lose their intense coloration when they grow up, but some keep them more than others. Those are the ones to be selected out. Over many generations you should end up with an intensely colored strain of bumblebee shrimp.

Thank you for the ID and the information on the "black midget". I got lucky with them and got both males and females and I already have some babies. They are really pretty shrimp and the babies are tiny (just like you described ). I think I may have lost the male though. They have plenty of places to hide and are still quite shy so I'm not positive, but I haven't seen a berried female for awhile. The tank they are in seems stable, so maybe one of the babies will be a male.

I am working trying to get colonies going of the various shrimp I have found. It is quite a challenge.

Right now I only have 6 adult Bumblebees, but hope they will continue to do well. All of the ones I have have good color. It will be fun to see what the babies look like as they get bigger.

Glad to read that you have both males and females! My colony, which I had for years, died out during my move from NYC to San Diego. I am now in the process of building up another colony after getting lucky and finding a male. I have some offspring and, sadly, my male also died recently. Let's hope that both of our colonies can get established. Newjohn has a group of these guys, too, and hopefully his group can grow, too, so we can spread this shrimp in the hobby. It's a great shrimp.

Sorry to hear that John. I too have had a female bumblebee berried. The first time she carried the eggs for 6 weeks, but I can't find any babies. She is now berried again and I hope there will be some vissible sign of surviving babies. I keep them in a tank with RCS which have been breeding like crazy! Anyone have any insight into this?

Seems like the baby bumblebees hide more and better than other shrimp babies I have. The only ones as shy and hard to find are the white banded babies. The bumblebees sometimes come out to eat. They like it under the piece of driftwood I have in the tank for them.

Let's hope that both of our colonies can get established.

I will be watching for updates on them. It would be good if there were several different colonies.
I am sorry to hear you lost your beautiful colony. They are sensitive little guys.

I just found another Berried Female.

Most of the problem was,
I was working way to many hours, and when I finally got home.
The Family is more important than my hobby.
So my hobby suffered

And It takes time to get the shrimp happy enough to start breeding again.
