Bacterial mat

Post by Harry »

Does anyone know anything about the bacterial mat that develops on the floor of the anchialine pools, or possibly on the floor of the aquarium? Mustafa? In my 10-gallon, I notice that the shrimp spend a lot of time with the aragonite sand that I use for the tank floor. There are areas where the shrimp spend a lot of time "grazing", although there is no apparent food there. And in those areas, the sand takes on a decidedly different look. The sand grains seem to cluster and develop a dull matte look as opposed to the original deep black sheen. Could a bacterial mat be forming? I understand that such a mat is a food source in the anchialine pools.

There are bacteria all over your tank. They are part of the "biofilm" on all surfaces. It's not just algae.
