Thriving Tank!

Post by qsjb »

Thanks to Mustafa, I have an awesome, thriving tank with no maintenance at all!

Started Sept 18 2017
2 gallon tank (1.5 gallons of water, glass jar from Walmart, and custom made plastic cover)
Livestock: 24 Opae Ula, 10 Snails + 7 New Baby Snails, 1 Mossball
Crushed sea shells as calcium source
Non-live white sand and rock
LED Light from Home Depot
Nano thermometer (room temperature kept around 21-22 celsius, no internal heater)

Looks great. Looks like algae is growing on the top of the rocks?

Yup, tons of algae growing on the top of my rock since it’s closest to my LED. That’s also where a lot of natural oxygenization happens where groups of bubbles form from time to time.

Check out these pictures which also show how my snails crawl on the under surface of my water where algae forms too. It’s very cool to watch and I only learned now that snails can walk across water!

Cool! That’s what also is happening in my cycling tank. I think it’s probably fully cycled because it has been generating bubbles everywhere for a week now. I think shrimp will arrive next monday, any tips?

When the shrimp arrive literally just take the bag, open it, and dump all the contents including the water and shrimp into your tank.

Make sure no shrimp get stuck on the wall of the bag. Simply swirl the water around while pouring them in the tank.

No need to acclimate temperature.

There probably will be a few strings that come in the bag for the shrimp (I think Mustafa does this to keep the shrimp happy in transit) which I recommend dumping into your tank and removing sometime shortly afterwards.

Don’t feed them or do anything special. It’s best to leave them be. In fact when I got mine I went on a 2 week vacation and came back with them healthy.

Awesome little tank! Looks like Monument Valley in Utah or the walls of the grand cancon. :D
What kind of LED light is it? It's not easy to recognize in the picture.

@Mustafa - The specific LED product in my tank is linked below. It's priced amazingly low considering it provides me extra replacement light pucks which would in total last over 6 years: https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.3-li ... 51005.html

By the way, I discovered just now my first berried shrimp! This is after 4 months since starting my tank which I feed very minimally (i.e. every 6 weeks).

Berried shrimp update:

Looks like 9 healthy babies were born! They seem to really enjoy the light and mainly swim vertically. I haven't fed the tank for a while and plan to let the tank be increasingly more independent.

Thanks JoanToBa! I hope it goes well on your end!

Looks like I have another set of babies on the way! I may start a new tank with parts of my current one but smaller for the office :)
