Mysterious green substance underneath shrimp

Post by Tjeerds »

First post..

I've tried the two biggest Dutch shrimp-forums to find an answer to what is growing underneath one of my shrimps.
Still can't find the answer so I decided to post a topic in an international forum; more member is more knowledge.

The tank:
- Superfish home 25 (my first, up and running since may 2013)
- (Trying to grow a) Moss-wall, few other small plants
- Pump
- Oxydator
- Temp. 20-22 Celcius (ca 70F)

The shrimps:
- 6x Sakura (Neocaridina heteropoda var. Sakura)

The fish:
- 7x Paracheirodon simulans
- 2x Pangio kuhlii

The situation:
- All the shrimps eat and act healthy, they grow and I find old scales every now and then.
- One of the shrimps (just one) is growing something green underneath it's body.
- Because I've read about eggs starting green I thought I had a pregnant one.
- That was two months ago.
- The green substance keeps growing but more like spaghetti.
- Right now it looks like it's growing underneath the whole back of the shrimp.
- The shrimp still acts like a shrimp and as said doesn't look sick (to me, a newbie)

Pictures (most recent):

I've searched the internet for parasites or bacteria creating this symptoms but I couldn't find anything looking like this.
Ok guys, show me your knowledge and give it your best shot..!!

Regards from the Netherlands! :D

I have never experienced this on any of my shrimp, but someone else had posted about this some time ago here in the forum. I don't know what microorganism it is, but it obviously feeds on either the shrimp exoskeleton or shrimp eggs. Either way, if your shrimp is healthy this problem should disappear after your shrimp molts.

I'm having this same problem with my cherry shrimp. Anyone know what we need to do or will it just go away as stated?

Just don't do anything...if the shrimp survives and molts, it will probably be gone.

Thx for the reply.

Seems like at least 1 of 8 so far did not make it through the molt process.

Found her dead this morning looks like she had eggs too! :-(

What cause's this problem and do you know why it happened and how I can prevent this in the future?

Pretty much all problems with shrimp are caused by poor water conditions due to: 1. poorly cycled tank 2. overfeeding 3. a combination of both. All these factors allow pathogens to gain a foothold in/on the shrimp as the immune systems of weakened animals don't work all that efficiently. Using medicine of any kind, such as antibiotics, makes the situation even worse by usually messing up the tank (e.g. the cycle) even more. The only thing you can really do is make sure that your tank remains cycled and control the amount you feed.

It's not contagious...just leave them alone. This type of stuff happens when you have lots of organic material (wood, leaves, dead plants, dirty filter etc.) combined with lots of feeding (=nitrate).
