8 inch substrate

Is 8 inch deep lava rock substrate too deep? I’m afraid of the gas buildup after a couple years of keeping the opae ula in.

I can't tell from the pic if it is just lava rock with no gravel of any kind. If it is just chunks of rock you will be fine. You will need a calcium source for buffering the water though.

It is small pieces of lava rocks. About 5mm in diameter pieces. 8inch deep. The top part has dragon stones and crushed coral substrate. I attached a clearer picture below.

Just wanted to say this hardscape looks awesome! I'd be interested to see updates when the shrimp come in.

8 inches deep certainly sounds quite excessive, but I'm not sure how safest to deal with it. From the picture it's hard to tell, is it just one end of the tank that has substrate that deep?
