Black algae in cycling tank

Post by LittlePenny »

Hello everyone,
I have been cycling a new tank for my shrimps. I did what I always do-
Cleaned the jar with boiling water
Cleaned all tools with boiling water
Rinsed sand (that I have previously used in another tank) with boiling water
Got barnacles as decoration- boiled in a pot for 5 mins

I added my distilled water with aquarium salt (.25 cup per gallon) and let it sit. Today I noticed black algae, which I have never seen before.
What do I do? Is it possible to get rid of? Should I just start over (boil everything and start with new water)? Should I scoop it out and let the cycling do its thing?

Thank you in advance!

Not sure what that is, but it looks like cyanobacteria. I'd remove as much of it as possible. Also, if you really used "aquarium salt" meant for freshwater, it will kill your Supershrimp. You need to set up the tank with the appropriate salt meant for Supershrimp and/or marine tanks. So, if you used aquarium salt, I'd start all over again.
