Java moss and fertilization ?

Post by thgng »

I keep my Red cherry shrimp in a tank with gravel and some java moss.

I give the 4 Gal. tank a drop of liquid fertilizer per day to encourage the growth of algae and the moss.

The lighting is a 15Watt PL light. Is this recommended ?

Does the fertilizer have copper in it?

I don't think so. I have used it for months.
Does anyone use liquid fertilizer in their shrimp tank ?

I don't use CO2 because after the light has been switch-off, the excessive CO2 might kill them. I don't use an air pump, just a hang-on filter.

I don't fertilize any of the tanks--I let the fish do that. I do refill the shrimp tanks with water from one of the fish tanks when we do cleanups or just top off the shrimp tanks. The plants thrive and we don't have to worry about poisoning the shrimp (of course, no meds in the fish tanks either). We run sponge filters in all the shrimp tanks so there's no chance of any of them getting sucked up into the filter. Have never used CO2. The tanks do get a fair amount of indirect daylight and then the tank lights switch on at dusk for 5+ hours a night (more as the daylight gets shorter).
