Amano Shrimp: Marsh or Mountain?

Post by chlorophyll »

Does anybody know a little more specifics on where Amano shrimp originate from? Like the exact place in Japan, and whether they tend to prefer or thrive better in marshes (slow/standing water) or mountains (stronger current)?

Their Japanese name "Yamato numaebi" means "Marsh Shrimp" so it's safe to assume that they do live there in great numbers. They inhabit other habitats (such as rivers and creeks), too.

Their tolerance to different water parameters suggests they live in various habitats in nature. At least that is what I think :)

Hmm. Judging by their quite strong upstream rheotactic tendancy, I would think they are inclined to climb past the marshes and into streams moreso. Perhaps they are a species that migrates closer to the sea for larval release(?)... wonder if their larvae do fine in a rough rocky downstream migration?
