Opae lost of color (Add iodine & calcium ??)

Post by LiquidBee »

I just noiced that a lot of my little hawaiian opae have lost their rich RED color, and I read that adding a little iodine and calcium drops will help.

Just want to make sure this is true and that it won't harm my shrimps.

Not true, although this misinformation about Iodine (and additives in general) seems to be hard to kill. I have no idea who keeps spreading this information still, but take it from me...it's wrong. Iodine dosed in very small amounts will not harm the shrimp, so people say: "Well, if it won't harm them it can only benefit them." Wrong again! You can also sprinkle some very small amounts of powder sugar into your tanks which won't harm the shrimp, but it's totally useless. I have written a lot about how Iodine supplement is totally senseless. Just perform a search in this forum for "Iodine" and read up as much as you can.

I would look at other things like lack of water changes and overfeeding as the reasons.
