What kind of shrimp is this?

Post by wheezo »

I have some shrimp that I got from the LFS awhile back. He gave me the name zeylanica. I can't really find any information on them. He told me that the blue ones were males and the red one were females but I find them changing color often, red, brown, blue, clearish yellow, etc. Does anyone know the proper name? scientific or common?

You really need to post a picture, otherwise it's impossible to tell what shrimp you have considering that there are thousands of species out there.

Malayan shrimp or what is sometimes called Caridina sp. 'zeylanica':

Chameleon shrimp (a predatory long-arm species):

Often, you'll see Malayan shrimp and Amano shrimp together and labelled as "algae-eating shrimp." Truth is, Malayans aren't nearly as effective for algae control. They're nice to look at, though, when they come out of hiding  .

Hey Thanks, I believe it's the first link. Malayan Shrimp? or Malaysian Shrimp?

No problem. "Malayan." Not "Malaysian." Mine are always changing color. I bought one that was blue at the store, and when I got home, it was more red (not the "dead" sort of red :-D ). They're very similar to rainbow shrimp, only bigger and they hatch tiny free-swimming larvae.

If I were to find more of these shrimps, how would I go about breeding them?

Well.. Just make sure you feed them well and make sure the condition of the water is good and they will get pregnant in no time!

In our part of world, some call it a 'rainbow shrimp' because it can appear in different color depending on the water conditions. It is the cheapest algae eating shimp that i can find in my country, 100 pieces for USD$5
