Re: Newbie with probably a really dumb question

There are no species of freshwater shrimp that I am aware of that would choose (or even be able to) leave the water, even in an uncovered tank. Most freshwater crab species will, and many freshwater crays will. But shrimp? Nope. The real value of a cover in such situations is that it greatly reduces...

Re: I found this in my Cherry tank

Is it soft? Looks like maybe some kind of freshwater leech.

Re: Chloramine Removal

Well here's my view... If your the carbon block in your RO system removes all the chloramine, but you go ahead and treat the water with a little Prime (or whatever) anyways...no harm done. If the RO system fails to remove all the chloramine and you decide not to treat the water, you very well may ha...

safety of PEX pipe

A question related to the safety of using items in shrimp tanks... It has to do with PEX (crosslinked polyethylene) piping. I'd like to build a "cray condo" for a mixed tank of CPO's and dwarf shrimp. At Home Depot earlier today I bought a length of 1" PVC pipe and a length of 1/2&quo...

Re: Blue Rams Horn Snails

Theoretically, if you just kept breeding brown ramshorns you might eventually get the occasional one with a blue coloring...but that would take forever. If you really want blue (or any other color), you basically need to find someone who has a strain of that color already going and get some from them.

Re: Crayfish as snail control?

Well FWIW, a few years back I had just gobs and gobs (100+, maybe 200+) snails in a 29g community tank. I put in one Yo-Yo Loach and I would say within about 3 weeks there was not a single living snail to be found anywhere in the tank. It was absolutely amazing. So I don't know how big your tank or ...

new Chinese species popping up on AquaBid

Not sure if folks here have been watching AquaBid lately, but there is a new seller (well, I presume new, he has only 24 feedbacks) on AquaBid who claims to live in China and says he is collecting species there. Among the species he says he is selling are one he calls Flame Shrimp (looks similar to ...

Re: RCS and Seachem's Flourish

A lot of people mention using Flourish and Flourish Excel(?) for plants. The bottle that I looked at lastnight (Seachem's Flourish) contains .0001% copper. Will this be ok for my shrimp? or should I get another type of fert (Petsmart did not have Excel). I have not found (locally) any ferts that do...

Re: Crayfish in Ponds

It seems to me you're going to be trying to walk a fine line. If the crays are too small as compared to the goldfish, then the crays become goldfish food. If the crays are too large compared to the goldfish, then the goldfish become cray food. (At least potentially...depends upon how large the pond ...

Re: help me plan my next tank(s)!!

Yeah, tomorrow I'm going to be attending my first aquarium club meeting in this area (it's actually an Aquatic Plant club but from talking to a couple of the members they say they talk a lot about livestock too--and there are at least a few members who currently have shrimp). So I'm definitely all o...

help me plan my next tank(s)!!

Hi all, last I posted was in the spring when I started a thread about being in "shrimp withdrawl" due to living overseas in Italy and not having the ability to get my hands on the supplies I needed to set up any tanks. Well, I am happy to say I am back in the USA now and moving in to my ne...
