Water

The person who posted on this probably saved others from near disasters also. Regarding the well water - I don't have enough experience to know if this is a seasonal blip or if there is a root cause. I've only been keeping tanks since March. PH and ammonia both increased so something is happening in...

water quality

Just a note too - I'm not on city water but well water. Those on well water should be careful also. I know well water isn't compatible with most of the advanced species. I had a big blip two weeks ago in my numbers PH up to 8.5 and ammonia at .5 (normally PH is 8.3 and ammonia .15 - after bubbling f...

Sand Substrate

Sorry - I don't mean to hijack your thread but I've been thinking about this for a couple of weeks. I'm still waiting until the tank I have is ready for shrimp. I put black tahitian moon sand in. The tank has a ton of pond snails that came with the plants. I don't have the heart to cull them and the...

PH

I've never heard of PH that low. That's some powerful driftwood you have :) The driftwood I had bought for my other tank did nothing but colour the water - PH is still above 8 but I have fish that don't mind high PH in it. I can see why your shrimp were acting strange. I have the opposite problem lo...

Thats exciting. Congrats.

Any ideas what you'll be adding to your new tank yet? What size of tank will you be getting?

Tank

It will be a while longer before I get shrimp :( Found a dead signifer this morning and have realized now I have a faulty filter - it wasn't even running. I have a nylon over the intake and it's very clear never clogged. This is the second time it's quit. DH got it working again the first time. I to...

Amanos

Thats a no go for Amano breeders at the meeting :? . Some members do cherry shrimp and there were some at the mini-auction tonight. They were sooo tiny!

I've found that being in Canada really sucks sometimes - I wish it was easier to ship up here :(

Amanos

I would try and breed them in a heart beat. I've read many posts about peoples experiences on this forum. I could plan for everything before I get them. I'm going to the monthly meeting of the local aquarium society tonight and I'll ask around and see if anyone breeds them. From the local aquarium s...

Cycle

I added some Tahitian Moon Sand last weekend it looks neat. I'm still not sure if I've crashed the cycle in this tank so we'll see. I haven't seen a sign of NitrAtes in five days. So either the plants are doing their job or I am starting the cycle all over again! I had just added ten small variety o...

Tests

I'm using the AP drop kit tests. I've dropped many hints about a PH meter for christmas and I'm actually researching them right now. I was looking at the pens and many don't seem as accurate as I had hoped they'd be - within .2. I appreciate the recommendation and I'll look this one up today :D I'm ...

FAQ

As a newbie - still without shrimp :( I think this article was very helpful!

I also would second the recommendation that you place a sticky at the start of this forum.

I won't go anywhere else for info. I wouldn't even go to the LFS staff for advice. This site is it!

Frustrated

I'm getting just a tad bit frustrated. It took me two months to fishless cycle this tank and I might be back to square one - really long story OY!!!Have to wait and see what happens here. I have a bigger problem than that - my PH is 8.4! The PH in my 40Gallon Goldfish tank is always at 8.1 :? . PH a...

insert

I bought one of these once for a 40G tank and it caused ammonia to jump!!!! I'll never risk it on another tank let alone ones with delicate and sensitive shrimp. I would think Prime would be safe for once in a while use if you monitor the tank for ammonia. I also have those seachem ammonia alert car...
