Judging from the amount of mollusk shells everywhere, I'd say it's likely that the water is fairly hard, but that's a guess.

I had some for a while many years ago. They did well with no real effort made to propagate them. They like fungi. There was an article in TFH in the early 80's (? maybe the late 70's) detailing a study an aquarist had done - it seems Asellus will eat fungused fish eggs, and not touch healthy ones.

A pet peeve of mine. There's no reason whatsoever for the word "red" to be in there - the word "cherry" is there to denote red. Even "RCS" and "CRS" gets confusing. I wonder why the German "red fire shrimp" never took off.

Oh, how sweet it would be if there was no blending involved and one could have a tank of shrimp that would be either cherries or yellows. I'm not holding my breath, but I can dream.

Actually, why do we persist in calling them red cherry shrimp? It would reduce confusion and it's not like we need to differentiate them from green/purple/blue cherry shrimp.

IME, once they learn they can eat pond snails, they can wipe hem out fairly quickly. My current batch of ghost shrimp doesn't seem hip to that, yet. I've also seen them go after mosquito wrigglers (!).

Just remember that "organic" does NOT mean pesticide-free. It only means that there are restrictions on which pesticides can legally be used. Pyrethrins, for example, which are plant-derived, are allowed.
