Re: crs and cbs kept together

They are the same species, however.

Sorry. Hate to be argumentative, but...I'm still going to go with my "exceedingly slim" wording. The red-tailed shark may be gone from the wild, but it is not extinct. While (with some digging!) you may be able to find a literal handful of species like the red-tailed shark that have been i...

Judging from the amount of mollusk shells everywhere, I'd say it's likely that the water is fairly hard, but that's a guess.

I had some for a while many years ago. They did well with no real effort made to propagate them. They like fungi. There was an article in TFH in the early 80's (? maybe the late 70's) detailing a study an aquarist had done - it seems Asellus will eat fungused fish eggs, and not touch healthy ones.

A pet peeve of mine. There's no reason whatsoever for the word "red" to be in there - the word "cherry" is there to denote red. Even "RCS" and "CRS" gets confusing. I wonder why the German "red fire shrimp" never took off.

Yeah. I wasn't sure, but Lars said they were in a post on the petfrd.com forum.

Two new Taiwanese shrimp

Courtesy of petfrd.com, like the link in my other recent thread, we have an article describing two new Neocaridina . In the discussion section, it has some interesting things to say about N. denticulata sinensis vs. N. heteropoda. Enjoy. http://www.sinica.edu.tw/zool/zoolstud/Journals/46.6/680.pdf

New Indonesian Shrimp

FWIW...

Some photos from Lars's recent expedition to Indonesia. I would have sworn the one shrimp was SW.

BTW, I would love to know the identity of the fish in pics #8 and #9. A new Oryzias, I hope..

Just wanted to make sure bpmox was aware of that one.

Oh, how sweet it would be if there was no blending involved and one could have a tank of shrimp that would be either cherries or yellows. I'm not holding my breath, but I can dream. :)

Not sure if this account is reliable or not, but according to this one source, it seems the two colors are the results of two separate mutations. http://www.planetinverts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=167

Actually, why do we persist in calling them red cherry shrimp? It would reduce confusion and it's not like we need to differentiate them from green/purple/blue cherry shrimp.

IME, once they learn they can eat pond snails, they can wipe hem out fairly quickly. My current batch of ghost shrimp doesn't seem hip to that, yet. I've also seen them go after mosquito wrigglers (!).

I got my first yellows about two weeks ago. Yesterday, I noticed a couple acting a bit hyper, and, sure enough, they were males. A quick tank-census turned up a berried female. That was fast! Compare that to my first experience with cherries - it took several weeks for any to get berried up, and I h...

Just remember that "organic" does NOT mean pesticide-free. It only means that there are restrictions on which pesticides can legally be used. Pyrethrins, for example, which are plant-derived, are allowed.
