I'm a noob at shrimp, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I've seen these listed as black, blue, red, or green midget shrimp (Caridina sp.), and they are almost always actually the color in your pictures. They do vary in color a lot though, so if you used a healthy dose of imagination they ...

I wasn't planning on any plants, and no matter where I put the thing, it'll get sunshine part of the day (whoever designed this house did not have aquariums in mind) so algae whould take care of itself. I'll keep that in mind though. It's looking like I might be able to by a tank and hood cheap from...

Easy. If you soak porus rock in sugare, it will penetrate deeply after a month or so. You can then heat the rock slowly to carbonize the sugar and the rock will become jet black. This is an old lapidary trick to produce a fake black opal. So, do you bake them in the oven? What temperature, how long...

Ok, I thought that might be the case... I wasn't really planning on a leaf bottom tank, but rather mostly rocks from my local creek and a leaf litter area at the front. I was trying to figue out how to not screw it up... I've never done a shrimp tank before, and am afraid of accidentally killing the...

The only problem would be "invisible shrimp." {snip} A thick layer of leaf litter would likely produce the same effect. If that's all, that sounds good to me... as long as they're healthy, and I can see some, I'm happy. What I was really (and irrationally) concerned about was fungus... I'...

That's marvelous... those are exactly the snails I have, although mine are yellow with black spots, rather than the other way like the one in the picture. I've been watching them, and they do seem to prefer the rocks and glass to the plants...

On a closely related topic, is it possible to have too much leaf litter? Like, if I covered the entire bottom of a tank with soaked oak leaves rather than gravel or what have you, would that cause a problem?

If they are Physa or Physella sp. pond snails then they won't eat any plants. I have Physa sp. all over my tanks and they don't do any harm. Really? Hooray! Googling left me with the impression that all pond snails equal death to plants. I'm glad I haven't done anything about them yet then. :-D I g...

Oh dear... that was obvious I guess. Disappointing though, now I'm going to have to pick them out. They're kind of cool looking, but I don't want them to eat my plants... :smt012

Mysterious spotted snails

Awhile back, I found a clear blob with dots in it on one of my plants. Curious, I let it be, and the dots grew and then vanished one by one. I didn't see any new life for awhile, so I assumed whatever it was got eaten, but now I have quite a few very small (size of a large pin head) snails, that are...

That's interesting, as my amano can't seem to get enough of the stuff. Maybe I just got a weird one though. It's amazing how shrimp are so tiny, but still manage to have personality sometimes.

I thought it was good to have gravel, because it gave the algae and good bacterias a place to grow? How much leaf litter are you talking about? Like, covering the bottom, or less? I actually live near a good sized creek, and was thinking of covering the bottom of my tank mostly with rocks from there...

A 10 gallon tank costs about half what a 5 gallon tank costs, and it is much better for the shrimp. It's as much of a space issue as a cost issue, although I'll bring that up... he just doesn't seem to understand why I need more than one tank. :D I certainly do want a ten gal, at least, I re...

I know I need an all shrimp tank, I'm having a little trouble talking my husband into anything bigger than five gallons though... On a good note though, we found one of the zebras, it's in this cave under one of the rocks that seems to go way back, so they're probably hiding in there. I'll pr...
