Offspring variability in Crystal Reds

Hello, I'm looking for info on the rate of variability of offspring from a given Grade of Crystal Red Shrimp. For example, if I were to purchase a dozen low grade "C" shrimp, would most of the offspring be C-grades with a few B-grades and possibly A or S-grades? Conversely, would Grade-S p...

Should bamboo shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis) be fed at night?

Do these shrimp sleep or stop feeding in darkness? Since the fish are faster and will likely eat the food b4 the shrimp will, could small food be added with the lights off when the fish are less active? The lfs has some of these shrimp and I've thought about getting them in the past. I'd like to try...

"That said, oddly enough, citation to specifics of pH affecting fish is not as easy to come by " I knew that was coming back! Thought I would give you the opportunity to say "I told you so" before I said "Ah ha! Now I see what you're getting at!" or something along thos...

I think the ".5 rule" (which I'm unfamiliar with) is one of those general guidelines, not a carved in stone rule. "Stress" is a broad term, can be cumulative, may or may not persist, and does not necessarily mean death. I'm sure you are quite familiar with this also. That said, o...

In fact, the logarithmic nature of scale suggests that any guideline like that is flawed. How so? To change the pH 1 adds 10X the amount of H+ or OH- to the water (or at least frees them up). Aquatic organism are constantly dealing with osmotic pressure (transportation of water in/out of the organi...

Thanks for the replies! My water is pretty hard (GH 11, KH 8) so I don't expect pH to shift much.

Maybe this will shed some light on pH... http://www.rhtubs.com/pH.htm Short answer, each 1 point change in pH equals a ten fold change in acidity/alkalinity. As for the water changes... I agree with the fresh water idea. Biological by-products accumulate constantly and the fresh water must be like a...
