I will have to say that my shrimp eat hair algae, thread algae, whatever algae they can get ahold of. I've pulled it from other tanks and put it in my shrimp tank, and they are on it instantly. The only algae they don't care for is the algae balls (moss balls), they leave that stuff alone like the p...
I would not keep clown loaches with shrimp or snails -- they are food! If the shrimps are trying to escape -- they are trying to escape from the loaches.
My only suggestion would be if you have another tank to hang a bag of substrate from that tank in the filter of this tank to help with the beneficial bacteria and/or do a water change. It appears you will be over the cycle soon, but shrimp are not good at enduring cycling. I wonder why your ph is 8 ...
Well, I do feed amply and I plan to continue to -- as a well fed planted tank is a happy tank (I do very little fertilizing -- mostly calcium/magnesium). However, I did read a comment by a German Crystal Red breeder who said that Crystal Reds breed less in the warmer temps (78/80 degrees). As that i...
I would suspect your NitrIte being the causative factor in the death of your shrimp. How long has this tank been running? Can you think of a reason why the tank may have gone into a mini-cycle? Your Kh of 5 would be perfect, but I think you will still be fine at 3, especially as you are adding the c...
There was actually a great article link I had, but I guess I didn't keep it that showed a gentleman actually using ghost shrimp to keep the fungus off of his fish eggs. Instead of using a chemical, Methylene Blue, the shrimp rolled the eggs and kept them clean. But, I wonder exactly what type of &qu...
Thank you Mustafa. The tank is well established, but there is no rotting leaves. I have extremely high light (5.1 watts per gallon, compact fluorescent), and CO2, so the plants grow extremely fast. I have to trim weekly. There is also no algae, as they do an incredible job with eating that. I do hav...
For those of you with a lot of experience with shrimp -- do you believe the population will equalize or will it overpopulate a tank? The reason I ask is because I do not intend to get into the business of selling shrimp, and I do have another tank for them, but my hope is that the population will re...
Ammonia is less toxic when the ph is acidic; however that is not why planted tanks would not experience a cycle. For a better answer to your question, I would direct you to Diana Walstad's The Ecology of the Planted Aquarium. By planted tanks, I would mean fully planted with fast-growing stem plants...
BioSpira is indeed by Marineland, and should be safe for shrimp and the only cycling product that I am a firm believer of. However, demand was far greater than supply and it has not been available for quite a few months. Anything still available I would not trust, and any Biospira kept on shelves I ...
I have read numerous accounts of "ghost shrimp" eating other shrimp and fish as well. My guess is that they are long-armed shrimp as opposed to "ghost shrimp," or that "ghost shrimp" is such an ambigous name that it comprises any whitish/clear-ish colored shrimp.
