Re: How do I vacuum the substrate?
I have some asolene spixi's and apple snails. Are they good substitutes for MTS or should I get real MTS for the shrimp tank? My substrate consists of sand and gravel 'cause I was told by a LFS owner that the more substrate I have in the tank, the better it is for the bacteria. Now that I have about...

How do I vacuum the substrate?
How do I safely do a water change, i.e. vacuum the substrate, without sucking up baby shrimp? I've got a 10G with shrimp and a pair of cory with fry. I use sand and gravel substrate with some moss and plants. When I do my watch change, I just suck out the top to avoid getting the fry and the baby sh...

Re: Sudden death of amano shrimp
I bought about 15 asolene spixi's and they are probably marble size or smaller. The ramshorn don't get any bigger than pea size either but there are a lot of them. As I mentioned before, I feed the tank 'cause of the fact that all my algae are gone. The livestock, specially snails, are going after m...

Re: Sudden death of amano shrimp
How does one usually account for bioload on shrimp and snail? The rule of thumb for fish is 1" per gallon so I know I'm ok there. But the # of snails and shrimp are hard to count. Besides, aren't they supposed to be really low since they are the cleaning crew? I forgot to mention I also have a ...

Sudden death of amano shrimp
I had about 20 amano shrimp and countless cherry shrimp, 10 spixi snails with a couple of julii cory's in a 10G. I changed my filter 2 days ago 'cause it seemed really clogged up. Last night the tank seemed empty than usual but I wasn't alarmed. However, tonight when I looked for the amano shrimp, 2...

Red cherry shrimps and lucky bamboo
I'm starting a shrimp tank and my local fish store sales person has no idea what Java Moss is. I did see some lucky bamboo type plants in their live plant section. I have a few stalks of those sitting in a small gravel pot right now. Would it be ok to put the lucky bamboo in the tank with my shrimps...
