Re: Limnopilos naiyanetri - Micro Crabs

These guys are really shy! Yesterday I finally got to see a male crawl around in the tank. I had just fed the tank, and he looked like he was picking up tiny bits of flake food. I was surprised at how much larger he was than when I acquired him. But still really small, bodily. I don't think I have a...

Re: Limnopilos naiyanetri - Micro Crabs

Well I just picked up some of these at the OCA convention of all places, LOL. The seller said she had more in the tank than she bought, so maybe these can be tank raised.

Re: Distilled Water for Snails?

Distilled water has no calcium. Snails need calcium to make their shells.

Re: Crabs!

I'm happy to see more people keeping crabs! I still have my Vampires and I've tried to keep several other species as well. I managed to get Bi-colors to breed, but the hatch was only 3 crablets. Unfortunately none survived. :( I also bought a pair of Panther crabs last summer. I love their coloratio...

Re: Celebes Jungle Crabs

Here's a picture of one of the crablets. It's on coarse aquarium foam, so you can see just how tiny they actually are. They won't color up until they get mature. Of all the pictures I took, this one was the best. My camera isn't very good.

Re: Celebes Jungle Crabs

I can try to get some pictures uploaded. I currently have 2 tanks of them going. I just discovered crablets in one tank yesterday. I thought the female had died becouse I couldn't find her since last december.

Re: Celebes Jungle Crabs

Sexing them is easy. Just put them into a clear deli container with the lid on. They are jumping crabs after all! Raise the container above your head so you can look at thier underside. Crabs have "tails" just like shrimp, it is called a pleon. Unlike shrimp, crabs keep it folded against t...

Re: Celebes Jungle Crabs

Hey orin, I haven't observed any cannibalism. If they do it's not near as bad as shrimp do. They like some space and keeping them in a deli cup is a bad idea. Males are intolerant of each other, so give them a bit more space. There seems to be a pecking order and will fight to establish dominance.

Re: Freshwater species of sponges?

invert phil, can you let us know what your water parameters were?

I found a biological supply house that sells them, but...kinda hesitant to try.

Re: Celebes Jungle Crabs

I think crickets are too agile for the crabs. My crabs will take mealworms that have been dropped in front of them. Small mealworms are perfect for them. I also keep a culture of flightless/wingless fruitflies in with them. When I slice a grape in half and drop it in, the fruitflies will gather on i...

Re: Celebes Jungle Crabs

Sorry to hear about the loss. It was about a year before the first of my brood took on the adult coloration. I'm still not sure how long the female carries the eggs/hatchlings.

Are you keeping all the crabs in the same tank? Have you noticed any cannibalism?

Re: Celebes Jungle Crabs

Well another update! :D I still have one of my original females. However I lost one of the 4 juvenials, which are now adult size. But today I discovered a 3rd generation!!! :smt005 Carapace diameter is probably 2-3mm. With lessons learned I'm going to start another tank and spread them out. I don't ...

Re: Limnopilos Naiyanetri

Good to hear that you have some offspring from your Mandarin crabs! :D My Celebes jungle crab offspring have a carapace diameter of 1/2 inch now and seem to be doing well. So far I haven't seen any of the adult coloration coming in yet, they look like small knots of wood with legs. At the moment I'm...

Re: Limnopilos Naiyanetri

The reason I associate captive bred with germany is because here in the states we seem to be slow to catch on to new species. "Vampire" crabs are the perfect example, there's seems to be a lot of german experience with them based on the number of german internet posts. I can't hardly find ...
