Re: Please ID my prawn
Definitely a Macrobrachium , but the image isn't good enough for me to hazard a guess at what species (and there are around 250...). Cheliped shape and the green stripe around the rostrum (if that's not just a photographic artifact) suggest that it's not M. rosenbergii (one of the species commonly a...

Re: Shrimp ID
The second shrimp are, as they were labeled, Amanos.
The first is a female Macrobrachium of some sort, but I can't say which species with too much definitiveness.

Re: Unidentified macro
From the shape of the rostrum and the stripes on the cephalothorax, I would say a young M. acanthurus.

Re: Mating Behavior of Macrobrachium crenulatum
I have some five-gallon aquaria and tubs at around 17.5 ppt salinity with Xiphocaris elongata and other Macrobrachium larvae. I'll be using something similar for the crenulatum.pixl8r wrote:Veneer,

Mating Behavior of Macrobrachium crenulatum
Yesterday evening, I video-taped mating behavior in some M. crenulatum I recently shipped back from Puerto Rico: http://www.vimeo.com/1256512. As far as I know, this is the first such footage ever taken for crenulatum . The female was being temporarily housed in a plastic "Kritter Keeper" ...

Re: Potimirim?
I'm curious, if it was collected over a year ago, is that a recent picture? It sure looks small for 1 year old. That was taken around a month ago. You're right -- it is quite small (the smallest grown shrimp I've ever kept, which isn't saying much, since I mostly deal with giant Macrobrachium ), bu...

Re:
From what I can tell this species is actually a crab, not a shrimp: Acetes paraguayensis is indeed a shrimp, I've discovered. It looks like it has well-developed swimming ability and some interesting communal behavior too. From this article (PDF) , which explores the possibility of Batesian-like mi...

Potimirim?
http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/7795/sv102345nm7.png At least that's what I think it is. Leveling-off of growth probably discounts juvenile Atya , definitely not Micratya poeyi or Typhlatya monae , and habitat and morphology aren't really consistent with descriptions of Jonga serrei . Collected in...

Life Cycle Completion in Brackish Ponds?
In Puerto Rico, I observed an artificial pond (fountain, packed-dirt central "island") situated by a hotel within 100 meters or so of the ocean. Shrimp species observed were Palaemon pandaliformis , Macrobrachium faustinum , M. acanthurus (and possibly M. carcinus ) as well as Xiphocaris e...

Decapods of the Río Ayuquila, Mexico
I'm collaborating with someone about to revisit the Río Ayuquila-Río Armería watershed, west central Mexico. On his last trip, he encountered this 15-cm Macrobrachium prawn in a shallow riffle. I believe it's M. occidentale . Does anyone have a list of the decapod crustaceans (crabs and crayfish as ...

Macrobrachium … is represented in the United States by 6 species : M. acanthurus, M. carcinus, M. faustinum, M. heterochirus, M. ohione, and M. olfersii . River shrimps are the largest fresh-water crustaceans in North America, and specimens of the largest species, M. carcinus , can be the size of l...

Wonders of regeneration
Background: Several months ago (before I fully appreciated this species' uncanny ability to master aquarium dividers), I discovered one of my largest Macrobrachium carcinus in the process of consuming a conspecific. Within the space of what was probably just a few minutes, the victim had lost all o...
