I was wondering about what is physically does to them-- is it a nerve toxin? Convulsions would point to that. I just want to know what it does to their little bodies.

Good news-- after a water change and a little bacterial supplement, the slime is almost completely gone 
I wonder if there are any critters out there that actually eat the stuff. My apple and nerite snails passed right over it.

The slime is clearing up on it's own. I won't need to treat the tank after all. I do keep tidy tanks-- I just misjudged the amount of food my new additions would require; a mistake I won't likely make again now that I'm more familiar with the new dynamics of my little community.
