If you want colors, maybe try "rainbow" shrimp. Once comfortable in your tank, they'll turn all sorts of colors. They're relatively cheap, too.

A number of the shops around here (in the S.F. Bay Area) get their shipments from Hayward, and *these* come from Southern California, I believe. But beyond this, I have no idea... Yes, ask around. There's a guy who lives in Canoga Park who often auctions his crystal red shrimp on AquaBid. Definitely...

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!!! This looks like the "odd" specimen I found on Sunday! I visited the LFS where I usually get my shrimp and I looked in their "algae-eating shrimp" container (which was littered with a lot of dead beasties) and saw this ONE shrimp that looked neither like ...

82 degrees is sort of high. Shrimp can survive colder-than-average temperatures without much trouble (sometimes cold will cause them to stop breeding), but above 80F can weaken them. I would bring it down to about 76F. Swordtails can get big and aggressive. You might want to think about separating t...

This is how I can tell between Malayan shrimp and N. denticulata sinensis shrimp... If you look at the photos (of what I believe to be Malayan shrimp) in the link and specifically, the upper right corner and lower left corner ones, you can see how the tail has distinct white "tips." They'r...

Shoulda figured... I had wondered why they changed the name. Over a year ago, I was considering (with more than a little apprehension) going in on a group-order to purchase plants and critters from them, but couldn't find enough interested local hobbyists. I would have purchased maybe two of the &qu...

I've seen C. serratirostris being sold by Arizona Aquatic Gardens. They *are* expensive, but they're pretty cool-looking.

Eraserbones, I think some of them died by my hand and others just died. I set up a tank with salinity of full-on seawater. The first few I just transferred directly from fresh to salt. They may have lasted a few minutes but I didn't see any the next day. Next few I tried to add a little more gradual...

Don't you mean "It will gladly take off your hands"? ;-)

I'm not a SW hobbyist, though, so I'm stuck with creepy nymphs :x .

I found two nymphs (on two separate occasions) in my tank. Nearly made me wet myself  . The LFS that I buy most of my plants from does receive large orders from Oriental, and I've seen damselflies flying around in the shop. Even found a nymph in a bag with plants right after I brought them home...

Hi, Heng Wah! Don't know if you remember me - I introduced myself via PM over at one of the planted tank sites. To answer your question, here is an earlier thread on this site (so you don't have to scroll down and look for it): http://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?t=281&sid=761da43...

the only downside of keeping yamato shrimp is they will start eating your plant and moss once they got no algae to eat :( I don't know - I hear this a lot, but my experience is very different... I thought the same thing until an incident with erect moss about a year ago. I received some in the mail...

If you're getting shrimp for algae control, I can tell you that shrimp for shrimp, Caridina japonica ("Amano" shrimp) will give you the biggest bang for your buck. I harvest thread and hair algae from other tanks to "treat" my Amano shrimp. The six of them fix themselves onto the...

Thank you, Mustafa. Yes, like C. japonica, they carry a large number of very tiny eggs. And like C. japonica larvae, they just sort of bob up and down (head-down) and are attracted to light. A lot of them are "perched" on the side of the tank, though. It'll be interesting to see how long t...
