A picture would go a long way to ID the little guy there are over 600 species in the US alone and quite a few of those are in Texas.
As far as feeding goes mine eat:
Worms
Fish
Plant Matter
Romaine
Kale
Ham
Pellets

I'm using the 50 2.5 but get the 100 macro and the kenko extension tubes and you can't go wrong.
