Re: New To Shrimp Keeping Please Help

if you're looking at home depot sand will work fine, i think that play sand is a little to fine, it has a tendency to "poof" whenever you disturb it. If you have a pool store near you they sell filter sand that is a little coarser that works better. Either way you have to rinse it good bef...

Re: New To Shrimp Keeping Please Help

whats wrong with the fluval shrimp that you listed? that should work fine. Just about anything will work in my opinion. even sand for pool filters. i would avoid anything painted or large gravel though, mine really like picking at the sand. I would also avoid some of the "blasting media" t...

Re: Looking for opinions on substrate options.

i've herd good things about it, but i've never used it personally. All i have ever used in my freshwater tanks is backyard sand. Literally Dig it up out of the back yard, give it a good rinse and ready to go.

Re: Which fertilizer plants can be used in a shrimp tank

basically nothing can be assured to be safe. you might use something, and its fine for a while, then everything dies. but your neighbor might use the exact same thing and everything's fine. Personally i don't use any ferts. Just shrimp poo. and my plants are doing OK. Not great, but they're not dyin...

Re: New tank + Pics

Thanks for the pics! Those shrimp appear to be just some normal wild type Neocaridina sp.. Lots of people sell them as "blue shrimp" although there is not a hint of blue on them. Alternatively, some of them are quite dark in stores but lose their coloration later on. Either way, they are ...

If your cichlid is anything like mine he's just going to see the shrimp as a tasty snack. Mine go after everything I put in the tank.

New tank + Pics

Just finished upgrading the shrimps to new living quarters. Old tank was a 2 gallon rimless. New tank is about 7.5 gallons, also rimless. Built it myself from old broken tanks. Tank is about 16Lx10Hx11D. Used all the sand, water, plants, wood and filter from the tank, so the cycle should've been fai...

Re: keeping shrimp in the dark

its pretty darn dark in the office when there is no one there, i don't have any external walls. but for some stupid reason i didn't even think of putting the light on a timer, i suppose i will try it without and if i think there are any issues i'll just pick up a timer.

keeping shrimp in the dark

I have a concern though, when no ones here its fairly dark. pretty much every weekend and holidays/vacations ect.
Think its going to bother the shrimps any?

Caridina sulawesi

Thinking about picking up some of these in the near future. They will be going into a 20 gallon shrimp only tank. Chances are the tank will take some of the population overflow from my 2 gallon Neocaridina shrimp tank. Pretty sure they should be able to exist together and reproduce without cross-bre...

Re: Possible new article?

thats what i've done, all the information is there, i wasn't refering to a general aquarium water quality article, but one that is very focused on "shrimping" These little guys definitally have their own requirements and preferences compared to regular fish. just a thought seeing on how ne...

Re: new tank for the shrimps

so far, so good, the babies are really growing, they're up to about a half inch long. still have one adult left, and about 5-6 babies, not sure on the exact count though, they never sit still long enough to count. the sponge filter is awesome, they love it. i'm rebuilding an old stainless tank with ...

Re: HELP! Shrimp have all died :-(

sounds to me like you might have hit the nail on the head with the driftwood and plants. If i get plants from anyplace other then a LFS that i trust (small mom and pop shop) then i soak them for a couple of days and rinse them between water changes (about 2x daily) i'm on a well so i don't have to w...

Re: HELP! Shrimp have all died :-(

water test information if you have it is very helpful, pH harness, ammonia, nitrates 30L, thats, what about 7 gallons or so. I'm not thinking that the small amount of chlorine left on the plants after you rinsed them would have a big affect on the tank, unless you added a bunch of non treated water ...
