Re: New Setup for Halocaridina rubra

I did try photobucket but don't see anyway of resizing on there. I can try to upload photos but you can't upload very many on forums without using links like with photobucket.

Re: New Setup for Halocaridina rubra

O.K. Share time. I've had the bowl set up with Mustafa's chaetomorpha with a 50W titanium heater and sunlight from an east facing window. I bought 60 Opae Ula's from a member of the planted tank forum and as far as I know none have died. I removed 12 of these and transferred them to an identical bow...

Re: New Setup for Halocaridina rubra

I see a couple of tiny snails in my bowl since adding the Chaetomorpha. Looks like some Tarebia granifera may have tagged along? This is the type of snail you keep with your Opae Ula right?

Re: New Setup for Halocaridina rubra

Got the special Chaetomorpha today and it arrived in great shape. You're correct in your description, much finer/softer than the other Chaetomorpha that I bought off ebay. It was like a brillo pad and yours is more like hair with some hairspray to make it kind of stiff. Looks almost like a completel...

Re: New Setup for Halocaridina rubra

Thanks, I'll do that. Where did you find yours? Can I purchase some of your Chaetomorpha?

Re: New Setup for Halocaridina rubra

Just removed the Chaetomorpha and replaced it with some Sagittaria subulata which I have way too much in one of my tanks. I am using it based on the recommendations of this site on brackish plants:

Re: New Setup for Halocaridina rubra

Thanks, I have the heater thermostat set to 76 and when the sun shines on it the temp gets a little over 78. The Chaetomorpha I got is the thick, wiry kind so probably won't survive. Can you give me a source for the thin, soft variety?

Re: Question for Sulawesi tanks

Using the Sulawesi Mineral 7.5 is a lot easier than allowing CaCO3 to dissolve slowly into R/O water. I just add a small amount to 4 gal. and use it for water changes. It's not very expensive. Maybe it isn't this product and I just got lucky. I didn't do a controlled experiment which would be the on...

Re: Question for Sulawesi tanks

But my three previous attempts were with straight R/O water and Eco Complete African Cichlid Sand which contains Aragonite and provides calcium, magnesium, and carbonate. So in my opinion it is the Sulawesi Salt 7.5 that is working in my situation.

Re: Question for Sulawesi tanks

I have Sulawesi Cardinals and Starry Nights (White Orchids) and use R/O water with Sulawesi Mineral 7.5 added to the water. I had tried unsuccessfully to keep these shrimp on several previous occasions with no success until I started adding the Sulawesi Mineral 7.5. I'm sold on it and credit it with...

Re: Looking for opinions on substrate options.

I've used the Fluval Ebi Shrimp Stratum with Sakura, OEBT's, and neon green shrimp with no problems. I'm currently using CaribSea's Instant Aquarium Freshwater Substrate Sunset Gold Sand in my Sulawesi tank that houses Cardinals and Starry Nights. I'm also using it in a new setup for Opae Ulas. It's...

Re: Unwanted snails

I had numerous tiny snails in my shrimp tank as well and added assassin snails but they wouldn't touch these little guys. They'll eat larger snails but not these. I gave up and removed the assassins and introduced several freshwater nerite snails to try to rid my tanks of filamentous algae. After se...

Re: New Setup for Halocaridina rubra

I have the shrimp bowl cycling right now. Have had it set up for about a week now. I went with inert sand, lace rock, seiryu stone, and some Chaetomorpha macro algae. I used Instant Ocean mixed 50% with reverse osmosis water and I have it setting next to an eastern window. I had been going without a...
