Re: Okay... Gonna try an "accepted" set up.

Someone gave birth in my original Bookshelf tank today. At least 15 larvae are doing the head down bop this evening... That's great!! Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I only had one batch of eight in almost nine months. I don't have any macroalgae and I only feed about every two to three weeks.I wond...

Ammonia still high after 4.5 weeks

I have two small vase tanks with plastic plants and cleaned shells, coral and sand. I placed some skimmed algae from my cycled tank into the two tanks about three weeks ago and placed them near the window so the algae would grow. I now have plenty of what looks like brown fuzzy algae but when I test...

MelWong: My only camera right now is a six-year-old kind of crappy digital camera, and I haven't the budget to get the nice Canon Rebel I want so badly, so good pix of my shrimps will have to wait. On the other hand, lots of other posters post glorious pictures of their shrimp, especially Jill, who...

Re: I have a green Opae?

Looks like the tomalley I saw in my lobster yesterday. I wonder if that's shrimp tomalley?
I have never seen that in my clear ones. I took your picture and tried to color correct the exposure in
Photoshop to get a better true picture of the little guy. Wow! That's bright green! Very cool!

Re: High ammonia count w/o anything live in the tank..why?

I would be lieing if I said I have the answers. Since your cycled tank is ok you could take algae and or snails from it and add it to your new tanks. You could also test the distilled water and the distilled/salt mix and see if ammonia is present. Ken Excellent idea Ken! My distilled/salt mix is sh...

High ammonia count w/o anything live in the tank..why?

I'm trying to start two small vase tanks. Both tanks have the right ratio of distilled water to salt and sand from Nature's Ocean (Nothing live). One has sea urchins which I boiled and rinsed before placing in. Both vases are covered. When I tested for ammonia, both small tanks tested between 0.25 a...

"I'm already pondering the possibility of enmeshing the strands of macroalgae in a screen to make faux "moss mats".

I LOVE this idea. The mesh would have to be plastic. I don't think you can use metal screening. Would you know where to find plastic screening?
I might give this a try.

Need recommendations for water test kits.

There are so many out there but when it comes to the Super Shrimp tanks not sure which are best. Should I buy a kit for salt or fresh water? Strips or test tubes? What are the top water test to check for? Some come with so many things to test for.
Thank you!

Is it safe to decorate the tank with Mushroom Coral?

Has anyone ever used mushroom coral in there tanks? Could it cause water problems?

Re: New Macro Lens close up of my shrimp

I really like macro shots, use them often for work. What camera and lens did you use? Did you use flash? Hi Harry, I used a Tamron 90 mm macro lens with my Nikon 5100. I used a tripod and light coming in from the side with a clamp lamp with one of these squiggly light bulbs. An LED light was also c...

Re: Are these decorations safe to use in my shrimp tank?

I never boiled anything. Some people have added hardscape and had ammonia spikes. That is why I put it in a separate container. A few days a week maybe two later I do an ammonia check. Still zero I feel it is safe. Maybe boiling is a good idea. Maybe this is over kill but it makes me/you fell bette...

Re: Are these decorations safe to use in my shrimp tank?

I see no problem with any of them. As long as they are clean and natural they should be fine. You could soak them in brackish water for a week or so just to make sure there is no hidden ammonia causing debris. I have even let algae grow on some hardscape and then introduced it into the tank. It att...
