Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

Wow, I can't believe it has been a year since I started with the Opae. I have had great success with these guys. Starting with only 27 shrimp, now I can say I have over 100 in 2 separate tanks. Both tanks are setup the same way: - Aquarium gravel - Black lava rock gravel - A few hiding spots - Macro...

Re: What to feed these little ones??

It is hard for people to understand that these shrimp can live A LONG TIME "without food." Let me give you a perspective: they can live 2+ years inside a sealed globe. Overfeeding kills more than starvation. If your tank is well lit, these shrimp are not starving. I'll leave the "huma...

Re: Ammonia still high after 4.5 weeks

Look at my thread and you will see my parameters were never down to 0. I did not see any ill affects on the shrimp and they are now reproducing.
PS: I'm just sharing what I experienced and not suggesting what you should do.

Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

I do not have snails, and although I can see how they would help control the algae, I don't like the idea that they would be in direct competition with the shrimp for food. What I believe I should get is some of your nifty brackish water chaeto. That would be a great way of eliminating nutrients fro...

Re: New Tank: Nitrite at 0.25 ppm

The shrimp should be fine. If you look at the thread I started, my water parameters were not all at 0 when I started. The tank is now covered in algae, but the shrimp love it! Do not feed or fuss too much with the tank (water changes, scrubbing, etc.). Stress and overfeeding will kill the shrimp fas...

Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

Hello everyone, It's been a while I don't update this thread, mostly because I stopped worrying about the shrimp and their water. The tank slowly became green, just as Mustafa predicted, and I could barely see the shrimp inside. I stopped measuring Ammonia and Nitrite. No feeding either, since they ...

Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

Two more readings:
03/12 - A=0.20, N=0.35
03/15 - A=0.30, N=0.50

I have done nothing to the tank except watch it. Don't know why water parameters keep changing (ammonia went up?!?!). I still see a few shrimp here and there, mostly just swimming around (not grazing).

Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

Before Mustafa's advice, I did a 60% water change on Sunday 03/03, then measured ammonia (0.25) and nitrite (0.10) again. After 24hrs, measured again - 0.25 and 0.25 This morning - 0.20 and 0.25 I still see one or two shrimp occasionally coming out of hiding daily. I got a new LED light. No filtrati...

Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

I am baffled. The tank was setup using RO water, I have no filtration, all rocks, decoration, etc. were clean before adding to the tank, etc. The tank set idle for one month before adding anything live, which was the 27 shrimp. No live plants or anything else. In one month, there was no formation of...

Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

Today I added an air stone. I read here http://www.bioconlabs.com/nitribactfacts.html that the nitrifying bacteria needs dissolved oxygen in order to work. Air can't hurt, right? After just a few minutes after adding the air stone I saw a couple of shrimp swimming around. Again, I think they are jus...

Re: Lesson learned - high ammonia levels

Just be careful to not stress the shrimp out with all the addition of chemicals, water changes, (re)moving rocks, etc.

Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

:? Shrimp are hiding again. #baffled. Not sure what to do and hoping experienced members will give their opinions. I am afraid of doing water changes and stressing out the shrimp. I am not even sure if the water is the problem since AmQuel+ supposedly would take care of the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate...

Re: New To The Forum & To Opae Ula

Got home and prepared another batch of water. This time I used distilled (just in case my RO has a problem). SPecific gravity again is around 1.014 and I'll leave it aerating overnight. I'll take the water to work tomorrow (where my shrimp are) and will start doing slow water changes throughout the ...

Re: Lesson learned - high ammonia levels

I have not tested my water, but my shrimp were hiding all the time. I read that they do that when water quality needs improvement. Today I used AmQuel+ (removes nitrate, ammonia, chlorine, etc.) and within a couple of hours I started to see shrimp moving around. That's another option for you.
