Re: My success story

The berried female from February began dropping larvae yesterday. This morning I count 6 little downward heads. She is carrying 5 more, total of 11 it appears. The final number may change--they're somewhat difficult to see. The incubation time was about 9 weeks, about 2 or 3 longer than last Spring....

Re: My success story

I have a couple of females that, when berried, like to perch on the back glass of the tank. With their backs to me they think I can't see the eggs bulging from their sides. On the other hand, the banded female I've mentioned before is quite the exhibitionist. She flaunts her eggs for everyone to enj...

Re: My success story

It appears I might have another breeding spree this spring, like last year. A third berried female showed up today. I've noticed a few males have become quite active, swimming rapidly around and bumping into the others. Warming temperatures, or are they getting the signal from the females to commenc...

Thanks minishrimps, and I stand by it--my sloth, that is.
Seriously, supershrimp are just the ticket for enjoyment without headache or hassle.
Hope you do well.

Re: My success story

Another berried shrimp today. I noticed a little plumpness around the upper abdomen this morning, and sure enough an hour ago or so, out came the berries. The eggs of the February berried female look to hatch soon. With no heater in the tank, the cooler temperatures in Fall, Winter, Spring slow down...

You two are kind, but I know a lot of folks don't like the minimalist look.

Re: My success story

A pic of the shrimp enjoying the warm 16,000 K morning 'sun'. The berried female is at the back, in the middle, near the top. She is the shrimp with the bulgy abdomen.
Yes, Ken, I had the same thought--nearing equilibrium?
I really am a crappy photographer.

Re: My success story

Time for an update. Last winter there was no reproduction at all. Then in April the shrimp went on a rampage/orgy of making babies. They slacked off with the return of cooler weather, so I thought they would repeat the schedule. This morning a female showed up berried (fifteen or so eggs)--3 months ...

Re: My success story

I have not seen a berried female since the last eggs 'hatched' the end of September. The room I have the tank in is a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house, about 66-68 degrees. The shrimp quit reproducing about this time last year as well. Since the only other parameter I control is the hou...

Re: Opae ula enjoying the current?

When I top off my tank, I've noticed a few of the larger females come over for a swim, or at least to see what's going on. The smaller shrimp, especially the larvae, just get pushed around.

Re: My success story

It is good to know the correct terminology--thank you.
We were out of town last week. The last berried female released her larvae while we were gone. They are 17 in number.
I see no berried females at present, but one is 'saddled'.

Re: Question about egg clutch

My impression has been the swimerettes do most of the job. I see eggs just about to fall out, then the female adjusts the eggs back into the clutch with her swimerettes. If there is mucous, it must not be very sticky.

Sorry I wasn't clear: I meant the exoskeletons are difficult to see due to their transparency.

Re: My success story

How does one tell if a shrimp has just molted, if the actual molting is not observed? body shape. the high arch on the back will become much more shallow as the soft inside is "freed". also there will be the shell(?) on the ground, or potentially being consumed. Thanks jones. Good info. I...
