Re: My success story

Thanks, Mustafa, it's been a lot of fun. This Spring saw a total of about 9 berried females. I thought they were done several weeks age, but this last week 14 larvae appeared. Mommy must have been hiding. In total I figure the tank added another 100 or so new denizens. A bittersweet update: My wife,...

Re: My success story

A quick update. There are now 7 or 8 berried shrimp. One has released her brood, another is in the process. There are 10, or so, larvae floating around.
It has now been 6 years for the tank, with no food added.
Hope everyone is having a nice Spring and Easter season.

Re: My success story

Hmm. Nothing else has changed with the tank (that I can think of). Maybe just a bigger population with more individual variation? The number of berried shrimp has stayed at 3, so this is not a reproductive explosion like I usually see in Spring.

Re: My success story

Yes.
I now have 3 berried shrimp. I think the warmer temperature from the HO fluorescent bulb has fooled the shrimp into thinking spring has come early.
I also think the cloudiness is decreasing with the old bulb.

Re: My success story

I assume the cause is temperature. The tank is in a room with temperature of 66 to 69 F during winter, 70 to 74 F in summer. The tank has no heater. I assume the water temperature is a little higher than the air temperature, but there is not a thermometer in the tank. Reproduction has only occurred ...

Re: My success story

OK Time for a quick update. I think I figured out the algae/bacterial bloom. And I believe it is algal. Several months ago I switched to LED lights in the tank hood. I put in all three rows of lights. I had the thought that maybe it is too much, so I put the old hood back on, with one HD fluorescent...

Re: My success story

I'll keep watching for late arrivals. The algae does not diminish or wane--just keeps the substrate covered. For a while I thought I was seeing lots of shrimp poop sinking to the bottom, but on close examination discovered that some of the shrimp like to tear off a chunk of algae and carry it with t...

Re: My success story

No berried shrimp in the tank, that I can see. Perhaps the breeding season is done for the year. I had a total of about 15 females bear this spring. All larvae are now swimming around. The bacterial cloudiness is still visible, but continues to lessen. I estimate there are between 400 and 500 shrimp...

Re: My success story

Yes, the bacterial bloom is still visible, but decreasing. Good to know the shrimp will consume the dead bacteria. Reproduction has slowed. At the peak there were a dozen or so berried shrimp, but now only two or three. Almost all larvae are now free-swimming. Hope everyone is having a great summer!...

Re: My success story

A couple of months ago I mentioned a cloudiness in the tank, presumably from an algae/bacteria bloom. It has persisted until now, becoming somewhat less as time goes on. A couple of days ago I noticed an interesting change. The top half of the tank is clear, the bottom half is cloudy. See pic. The s...

Re: My success story

I had a macro ball, but it slowly dwindled. I removed it. The algae now covering the substrate is just what has grown naturally. I did not plant it.
Last count of 13 berried females.

Re: My success story

The water is still a little cloudy. I'll see how the photos turn out.
Today, the first berried shrimp of the spring season showed up. I was almost convinced the tank had reached equilibrium.
The cluster looks small, about 8 eggs.
