Re: Lava Rock to Open Water Ratio

Here is my one-gallon jar with about 3/4 inch of black sand on the bottom and some lava rock. I try to keep the front clear of rock. But the nerite snails tend to push the rock around at times. I hope this helps. And as posted previously, mix your water separately and then add it to the landscaped c...

Re: Shrimp in hiding

Good thought. I have been cutting back on the light and more of them are coming out now. However, they no longer swim in rapid circles. They tend to amble about and feed on the glass and other surfaces.

Re: Shrimp in hiding

Water test kit shows no nitrites, no nitrates. I suspect the chaeto algae is soaking up the nitrates. Some of the shrimp are coming out, but very few. They are in the rocks and appear quite busy in there.

Marimo Ball experiment

I had read that Marimo Balls need brackish water to thrive. I have also read the exact opposite. So I placed two Marimo Balls in brackish water and four Marimo Balls in freshwater. Both setups had ample snails that I fed in order to provide the water with a means of fertilization. The balls in fresh...

Re: Shrimp in hiding

Some very small juveniles are coming out now. I still don't know what is responsible for this hiding behavior.

Re: Shrimp in hiding

I checked behind the tank and there are quite a few in hiding in the rocks and busy back there. Every now and then, one or two come out. Maybe it is just that time of year. I have a test kit on the way, but I believe the water is good. I did a 50% water change, just in case.

Brands vary by location. Any distilled water should be fine.

Re: Distilled water top off

You can top off onto a large spoon or spatula so you do not disturb the "landscape" or base material you have created. Pour slowly and carefully.

Shrimp in hiding

For the last several days my shrimp have mostly been in hiding. I have created a good amount of caverns with lava rock so they have ample space to hide. But they generally swim about in great abundance. I'm wondering why they have just gone onto hiding. I do see between 6 to 12 shrimp come out, but ...

Re: White powder on walls of aquarium?

Something is amiss here. I established my eco-tank ten years ago. I have done very minimal water changes - maybe a 10% water change three times over the ten years. There is absolutely no smell coming from the tank. I don't know why your tank has that smell. But until you sort that out, I would not a...

Re: New addition - Spike Tail Malaysian Trumpet snails

I periodically place chips of "wonder Shell" in my 2 gallon "eco-jar". This adds calcium carbonate and other needed minerals. I know it works because I have zebra and tiger nerite snails in the jar. When received, these snails had shell erosion. Their shells are completely healed...

Re: New addition - Spike Tail Malaysian Trumpet snails

Thanks! Tank is well loaded with shells and other forms of calcium. I keep it that way because the shrimp need calcium for their exoskeletons. Thanks again.

Re: Yes or no snails

Malaysian Trumpet snails - they serve a purpose. They clean up detritus, they burrow into your sand or other base media, cleaning it as well. I keep them in my tank. But it is a matter of personal preference. I suggest you research them on the internet to learn about possible benefits and problems.
