Re: Spinach anyone?

I'm wondering how much of the damage was done by the hermit crabs in relation to the shrimp. Based solely on my observations, the the crabs tend to be the more voracious eaters and I wouldn't be sure that the shrimp are actually eating as much as you may think. I could certainly be wrong but after w...

Re: New tank checklist

Thanks, I appreciate it. I spent way too long picking out rocks, using aquarium epoxy to make the tower of black lava on the right, and arranging everything. Arranging tall rocks inside a sphere is a challenge all on its own.

Re: New tank checklist

Sure thing. It's so difficult to get good shots through the curved acrylic. It took some tries but here's the best of the worst. I tried repeatedly to get a shot of the floating zoea with no luck. Then when I was taking a couple last shots of a snail a post larva shrimp just happened along. This is ...

Re: photos of dwarf hermit

That is probably fairly normal. I'd expect that if its a large supplier of marine animals they are in holding pens that don't really allow them to have their choice of shells. Sometimes mine even switch back and forth between two shells before they finally decide which one to make permanent. And I w...

Re: photos of dwarf hermit

I put 6 dwarf hermit crabs in my 20 gallon quite a while ago, before I even got my shrimp actually. I lost one a few months ago for unknown reasons but other than that their presence has been fairly uneventful. I added quite a few empty snail shells of various sizes and a couple have molted enough t...

Re: New tank checklist

And another batch of zoea have been released. They number in the "I have no idea" amount now. Its kind of hard to get a count. And after seeing another female with the strange looking eggs, and then doing some research its clear that eggs about to be released kind of hang strangely. So tha...

Re: New tank checklist

And now I've got 7 zoea floating around. The other day I was watching one of the mothers and her eggs looked odd, like they were falling off. I was certain that they were unviable. Now I'm starting to think they were about to hatch. I could be wrong, but either way, I'm on my way to a more crowded t...

Re: New tank checklist

Best update yet? Two berried females, that I can count for sure anyway. There's so many swarming around its hard to get a read on it but I have seen two at the same time so that many for sure. I'm not expecting any young this early on but I'd call this a very good sign :-) And snails... Good god, th...

Re: Lethargic/sinking shrimp

Here's a silly question. In all 3 of the original vases did you allow them to cycle, with water in them for the 2-3 weeks and *then* add the shrimp? Or just allow water to sit in a single container for the couple weeks then pour that water into the vases and then immediately add shrimp? If its the l...

Re: Lethargic/sinking shrimp

I may not have used the correct term for my water. When initially setting up the tank, I let the water sit and 'condition' for 2-3 weeks. I only use distilled water. A few of you have commented on the vase sizes being a bit small so I would like to add some more brackish water. My question is: when...

Re: Check out my Live Opae Ula Shrimp Cam!

I tried it last night on my tablet and couldn't connect but I probably tried after you had turned it off. Looked at it just now on my phone and it worked perfectly. Great idea :)

Also a great idea was using urchin shells as hides for the shrimp. I may have to steal that one.

Re: New tank checklist

http://i.imgur.com/HhM9Pic.jpg A quick shot of the rapidly multiplying snail babies. The juvenile (total guess at size in relation to development) snails seem to like to congregate in the macroalgae. Anything much smaller, around 2mm and less, seem to stay in the lava rock gravel substrate and rare...

Re: Lethargic/sinking shrimp

Glad to hear that there has been some improvement! Since vase #3 is so small it wouldn't hurt to remove the shed skin (exuvia? I know thats what a shed tarantula skin is called anyway) It will eventually start to break down. Once again my concern is with the small volume of water. It's not a huge is...

Re: Lethargic/sinking shrimp

Dead anything in that small volume of water is bad. As they decay ammonia will be produced. Ammonia is pretty toxic stuff especially if it can't be diluted very much. I would remove any live shrimp from that tank and move them into the large vase.
