Re: My Tank

Your tank looks great! What size is it?
I have about a 2 gallon and was thinking about adding a hermit crab, but I think my tank might be too small. What do you think? And do you have any advice for adding the hermit crab? Do you need to acclimate or can I just pop him in?
ETA: Do you add iodine to ...

Re: My Tank

Just an update. I started putting in a little less than 1/8th of an algae wafer in about every week and a half now. Not many shrimp go for it (I'd say about 5 or 6 out of 20-30), but the hermit crab eats his fair share and the snails clean up the rest. No left overs. I started doing this cause it ...

Re: My Tank

Just a question about the hermit crab...does it also get food only every two weeks or so? And if so, how long has it been in there?

The hermit crab only gets food when I feed the whole tank...which is very rare now. I usually just break an algae wafer in half (or even smaller) and drop it in ...

Re: My Tank

Re: My Tank

Thanks for the reply, I'm new to this species and I'm seeing alot of conflicting info on the SG levels preferred by these little guys. Mine came in water with the SG at 1.020 which I have bought down to 1.018 so far :)

I just went with Mustafa's 1.005-1.016 sg because that tends to be what most ...

Re: My Tank

what water stats do you have in your tank if you don't mind me asking?

Not at all.

Temp 72f-74f (Sometimes it jumps to 76-78)
Salinity 1.012 - 1.014
pH ~8.0
Nitrates near 0
Nitrites 0
Alkalinity from my chart is somewhere between 180-300

No water changes. I just top off the water when it needs ...

My Tank

I've posted here a few times with issues. My tank has been going for about year now and had a big surprise this morning so I figured it's time to post pictures of my setup and what I found!

Some background: I rescued some opae from a ecosphere and moved them into a 5 gallon tank. I also ordered ...

Re: Baby Shrimp Dying

No necessarily in a Supershrimp tank. Since the intervals between feedings are so long the organisms (algae, bacteria etc.) in the tank have enough time to eat up all the nitrates, phosphates etc.. However, all of that turns into Biomass (i.e. doesn't just disappear) and when these organisms die ...

Re: Baby Shrimp Dying

Once a month does not seem so bad, but the fact that the shrimp don't react to the food is telling. You probably have lots "organic pollution" in the tank that provides or grows the food for your shrimp. In other words, they have enough to eat and thus snob the food you give them. Organic pollution ...

Re: Baby Shrimp Dying

The first thing that I think about is usually "overfeeding", especially when I see "hermit crab." How much and how often do you feed the tank?

I break off a small piece of algae wafer (maybe about a quarter of an algae wafer) once a month or so. I put it in the tank during the evening and remove ...

Baby Shrimp Dying

Hello, having another issue now with my tank. My super mom shrimp has berried three times now. The first time she dropped all her eggs. The second time she dropped all of them, but one that hatched. It was floating around for a couple weeks and then disappeared (I figured it grew and started hiding ...

Re: Shrimp Swimming Crazy

Thanks, I figured no one had any idea... with the water and salinity being fine I kind of felt helpless, but I'm glad I figured it out and everything is ok! I've never heard of opae ula doing this when a female is getting ready to lay her eggs. I've never witnessed it before. Hopefully this will ...
