Re: Start an Opea Ula tank, need advice on substrate and cyc

I'm very much a newbie here so please take my experience with a bag of salt (Ken or the others please correct me if I'm out to lunch!) but I started with four containers and had nothing but trouble with the ones that tried to cycle for a month + (most likely because I stupidly had aquarium wood in i...

Re: Opae ula and macroalgea

:( well the algae hated my guts. I didn't lower the salinity slowly enough and it started to look worse and worse-though the shrimp LOVED it. Thankfully I had gotten a lot more than I need so I had kept some at 1.020 in a separate jar. I tossed the distressed algae back in with the rest and it seems...

I've uploaded a photo of the algae. Currently I have it in a jar with a specific gravity of about 1.020

Opae ula and macroalgea

Hello again, My local fish store just happened to have some marine macroalgae handy - red species - the other day. It looks like a Halymenia species. Has anyone had good luck acclimating them (or other similar macros) to the salinity of opae ula? I've started trying to transition it over but I'm not...

Re: New opae - feeding / dawrd hermit crab

Sigh.... The one hermit dropped dead within 24 hrs and the second keeps climbing out of the water on the small outcropping of rocks. He's stil wet but just stays out there even after. I toss him back in :/. I can't seem to get the one corpse out of the jar. It just got stuck under the substrate :/. ...

Re: New opae - feeding / dawrd hermit crab

Thanks Harry! I'll try to get them food 1x a week or so for sure. The one hopped into too smqll of a shell and the other has since climbed out on some wet rocks :/. At least they're entertaining critters!

Thanks again,

Ryan

Re: New opae - feeding / dawrd hermit crab

Looks like I found Mustafa's reply qerying hermits long term with opae if hermits need more food. Crap :(. I'm curious if people have had luck long term? These little guys are interesting and oddly cute so I'd truly hate for them to starve if I can avoid it

New opae - feeding / dawrd hermit crab

Hi everyone, New to the forum. I've found some fantastic information on starting up and keeping these amazing creatures on here so a big, big thank you!! My 40 opae arrived today and have put them into four large (4 to 8 litres) jar tanks with live sand and cycled added bacteria. I'll hold off on fe...
