Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?

They seem to molt more when adapting to new environments (like after being put in a new tank). Perhaps water conditions are shifting in your tank as it cycles, encouraging more molting.

Re: New Belgian opae ula owner!

Yeah, sometimes snails will spend days not moving and it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

Re: Tank setup

Actually you can use old freshwater tank water. Just make sure its only half of the water, and that the rest is distilled water that is at full sea water strength (thus you get half sea water strength for the tank as a whole). Mustafa explained it in this topic: https://www.petshrimp.com/discussions...

Re: New Belgian opae ula owner!

Its likely if you wait long enough and don't feed the tank then the glass should start to clear. That said, I don't think cleaning the glass a bit will disturb the shrimp too much. I've done it a few times in mine.

Re: My Ecosphere Rescue Story

Once they become free floating larvae they should be safe to put back in the tank.

Re: 11 months in and still no babies

Again, if you have that much algae its probably best to not feed anything. These shrimp seem to breed best under very spartan conditions.

Re: Beach rock

Wood is not a good idea for supershrimp (it breaks down, lowers ph, etc.), not sure about the rocks.

Also, there is some oxygen in the water even without a bubbler. Many bacteria may need oxygen, but they don't need much.

Basically once the tank is growing algae its ready.

Re: How many shrimp do you recommend for breeding?

Many keepers get babies within a few months, it seems to depend on how good the environment in the tank is.

I started with twenty and have hundreds now, so I know that twenty at least is enough.

Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?

Its safest to cycle, but a single supershrimp indeed exerts so little a bioload that I can see them tending to survive. Cycling in terms of testing the water, making sure there is zero ammonia detected, etc. is less important for these guys than many other aquarium creatures. Hence Mustafa's advice ...

Re: No longer lurking

That’s a great sound plan. Still cycling ^_^, as I see no signs of brown algae. It’s going on week 6. But I have more patience now, it’s good to have a cycling buddy lol. Have you tried adding a tiny bit of fish food? Sometimes the water can be too clean and some organic matter can help fuel algae ...

Yup, surface tension is one place biofilm accumulates.
