This board is only for discussing the brackish water supershrimp these days (it used to be broader, but Mustafa decided to centralize things), but there are plenty of others out there for freshwater shrimp.

If you want to not be told to put them in something bigger then you're in the wrong place. Basically you're going to be taking big risks no matter what you do when dealing with such small containers. I assume that 100 shrimp you mentioned at the end there is a typo? What are you using to test for ammonia? If its one of those strip tests it may be giving inaccurate readings. Anyway, to have an ammonia spike like that there must have been something organic decaying in the tank and not getting eate...

The colors can change temporarily due to stress, but also just from changes they undergo after molting. It may well change back after the next molt.

This isn't really a topic for this board, but I'll give my two cents. Namely if you can't put the fish in another tank then the most you can do probably is provided as many hiding places for the baby shrimp as you can. That raises the odds that some will survive.

8 inches deep certainly sounds quite excessive, but I'm not sure how safest to deal with it. From the picture it's hard to tell, is it just one end of the tank that has substrate that deep?

It certainly is a interesting unintentional experiment to be able to leave the shrimp alone for so long and see what has changed.

Just a fair warning that using marimo balls in supershrimp tanks is at best pretty controversial here. A lot of users have reported eventual issues with them (green does not necessarily equal healthy), and Mustafa has always been adamant that they cannot handle supershrimp tank salinities indefinite...

Minerals really shouldn't get depleted so much as recycled (especially assuming you have a calcium source in the tank, namely limestone or aragonite). I'm not sure why the macroalgae fell apart, but I don't think lack of nutrients would be the reason.

If you used distilled water then there shouldn't have been any chlorine in the tank to begin with. So indeed the test strip could be faulty. But yes, chlorine does dissipate from water over time.
