Thanks guys.
NancyM, that's probably a good idea, though I do still have two shrimp that are going strong. The current plan is to wait a month or so more, then proceed with restocking the tank.
Our previous snails, before they all croaked, were quite animated. They would frequently climb the glass.

Re: Popcorn of Death
Well I've been awful at keeping up with this. My tank is already mostly barren, like a beach in a rain storm, devoid of eye-candy. It's got sand and coral, and what's left of the macroalgae, which has disintegrated, for the most part, into cm-long pieces. They're still green though, so it looks like...

Re: Popcorn of Death
I'm almost positive there are no cleaning agents that could have gotten in via a cleaning crew or my hands, I've been careful and the cleaning crew here isn't that thorough. They weren't dying off this quickly when there was perceptible ammonia in the tank, so now that there isn't any I'm quite stum...

Re: Popcorn of Death
So now I'm at even more of a loss. Everything's been A-OK since I last posted; all the shrimp were doing fine and the last remaining snail is alive and well. However, I came back from the weekend to find two shrimp dead and a third in its last moments. It looked like its legs had been frozen into an...

Re: Popcorn of Death
Excellent information, both of you. Thanks.
Down to the last snail, and though it looked like it was going strong and very happy through Friday, it's looking quite sickly today. Ten shrimp left, all seemingly very content. The one popcorn-of-death survivor has since perished.

Re: Popcorn of Death
So Mech, I'm looking at the vials that each dose between 30 gallons and an irrelevant higher number of gallons. How do you break up each dose without letting the rest of the vial go to waste (I'm assuming you don't have a 30+ gallon tank)? Or do you break up the dose at all? (These ones) Screen Shot...

Re: Popcorn of Death
Sounds good, thank you for the clear methodology. And thanks everyone else for your input. Will keep updating. Ah Mech! I was gonna ask about such products. I'll look into that one, thanks. Only similar products I've seen in stock here are the API quick start one and that one looked sketchy given ce...

Re: Popcorn of Death
So about Seachem Prime: I mixed in approximately the right amount for a 2.5 gallon tank (which considering that a capful treats 50 gallons was essentially nothing), and the ammonia level remained constant according to my test. Thoughts? The bottle says that twice the dose is safe, but without an acc...

Re: Popcorn of Death
Thanks Mech. Maybe I will. Excellent questions KenCotigirl; I can't answer about the water that the snails came from as I didn't test it beforehand, but I can try decreasing the salinity from here on out. I don't have a hydrometer, so I'm not positive what the salinity currently is, but I've been ad...

Gotcha. Yeah mine are black and have white tips. Didn't know there were some with red. Those sound pretty.

Re: Popcorn of Death
Are the brackish water snails sold here the trumpet snails? I had assumed they were.
Right?? I don't get it, they're supposed to be the brutes and the shrimp the delicate snowflakes. The world is upside down, people.

Re: Popcorn of Death
I did lose another snail though, I think. It's in with the coral. Which I now realize is stupid, because if it's dead then I won't know what's giving off all the ammonia. Switching containers now. Shrimp are all active and upright and seem fine. Not sprinting around the aquarium as much as before. N...

Re: Popcorn of Death
I've had my hand in the tank multiple times and haven't felt any shocks (always rinse my hands thoroughly with tap water then again less thoroughly with purified). Temp is consistently 75 degrees. Too high? From what I understood this was around the ideal range. I rinsed everything with distilled on...

Re: Popcorn of Death
So I am now alone in my office watching MacGyver and hoping to do some MacGyvering of my own on these shrimp. Lost another two. But the others are more red than yesterday. Is redness a good indicator of the alivability of the shrimp? That's a technical term, in that I technically just made it up. He...

Re: Popcorn of Death
@JennyPenny & Varanus I had read your thread on the rotting piece of coral (I have one as well), so I checked mine for soft spots or slime or anything, and didn't find anything. I'll grab some Seachem Prime today and a bucket to put them in until i can figure out whats going on int he tank. I'll...
