Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

I have to say a big thank you to everyone here, especially Mustafa. Not only did the babies from the first round survive, just today I got a new batch :) I fed them for the first time in months last week and it brought my son and me such joy to watch them fight over the tiny shrimp pellet  ...

Re: I've got babies

Congratulations! It's so gratifying to watch the babies and to get the ultimate feedback that your habitat is set up correctly.

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

I'm pretty sure the two "crazy" shrimp are just males going nuts to find possibly molting females in the tank. It's pretty normal behavior and can last a very long time. That's finally the conclusion I came to and I stopped worrying about them. I have a bunch of larvae floating around and...

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

Sparrowhawk. Never add salt to water that has living creatures in it. Follow the directions. The reason I asked about salinity is you implied the snails died and the shrimp were acting odd. You could go to a pet store and have them check the salinity. While the adult shrimp can adjust to water chan...

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

The larvae float until they metamorphose into tiny shrimp, its only at that point that they go into hiding for a while. So it depends on whether the larvae that vanished metamorphosed or not. If they did then you should find some if you look long enough (they don't always hide so much as stay very ...

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

How are you measuring salinity? Ken I'm ...not  The two shrimp are a lot let hyper even though they haven't gone back to their old more zen ways yet. They also have some color back. I'm not observing any larvae but they're supposed to be hiding out for a while, right? i have one more berried ...

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

I don't see why some added marine salt would cause problems, especially if its only a couple of shrimp that are having problems. How much salt did you add? Unless it was a lot I wouldn't be quick to do a water change, especially given you have larva (which are more sensitive than the adults to chan...

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

i think I know what went wrong. I stupidly added salt to my distilled water when I added water to the tank last week. I'm off to buy some fresh distilled water and will attempt a water change. Hopefully I don't kill the little ones!

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

There's definitely something wrong with my tank. The two shrimp who've turned white have been swimming around the tank non-stop, at full speed and harassing the berried females and everybody else. I'm trying to think of what might be the reason. I tried to scratch off some of the algae from the surf...

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

Awesome! There may even be more. When it rains, it pours! :-) And so it has! I have at least 10 babies so far, all floating close to the top of the tank. Adorable! I also have my first molt. And two of my shrimp have gone completely white. I know they lose their color when stressed. I tried to clea...

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

There she is!

btw, now that i'm preparing to top off the water, i also want to figure out a safe way to clean the glass. It's just covered in round blobs of film which make it hard to observe (or get good pictures of) the shrimp

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

Re: Beginner Jar-Habitat

Hi Varanus! They should be able to go in the skull but I haven't seen them go in or out even once. They prefer the lava rocks instead. I placed the rocks in a way that created a small passage. Perhaps that will be good enough. I really hope I get baby shrimp some day :-) If there are males and femal...
