The clams will only eat the small stuff that drifts in the water--they're filter feeders--so they won't exactly "clean up what the shrimp don't eat." Snails will eat leftovers but they will also poop (the more they eat the more they poop). I have pond and ramshorns in all our shrimp tanks ...

My approach is "try it" (a small piece) but always be ready to immediately scoop it out if no one is interested and/or if it begins to disintegrate (or something) in the tank. I've fed my shrimp and snails avocado to see if they liked it--they initially all swarmed over it but gave up on i...

You didn't mention what kind of shrimp you have bred. If you're tank is well established and has lots of plants and java moss and no other lifeforms other than you shrimp, there ought to be a good amount of infusoria and rotifers to feed the babies, along with microscopic algae in the water (and on ...

The problem with, and why some of us discourage using small tanks, is that since they hold less water (and a bigger tank), the balance in the tank can more easily and faster become bad, killing your shrimp before you realize anything is wrong. Figurnig how much to feed them without polluting hte wat...

My LFS sells it, both for egglayers and for live bearers, but I'm at work and don't have access to my stash. Google or go to one of the better online fish stores (http://www.drsfostersmith.com - I know they carry it). You can also just use the yolk from a boiled egg, mash a very small amount (like, ...

From what I gather from some guys in Hawaii I have talked to about opae, they are seasonal breeders--although someone had a shrimp that hatched eggs in mid-winter (but there was no scientific collaboration on that nor was there any surety that the shrimp was an actual opae ula since opae are often f...

Be careful if you purchase from out of your country. Many places (like the US) have import agencies and if your shipment doesn't have the correct paperwork done by someone (and sellers, like buyers, don't usually deal with that stuff), not only might your imported stuff get confiscated but you could...

Not sure you'll need a power filter. We've had two tanks going since last summer with only a sponge filter in one set at minimum bubbling, the other tank has no filtering at all and both are doing really well--no shrimp loss, haven't noticed any babies yet but spring and early summer are supposed to...

Shrimp need calcium to keep their shells hard. If the food you feed them isn't high in calcium, then you'll have to add some to the tank. I've found the easiest for me is to use a "cuttle bone" (white ovally item that birdkeepers hang out for their birds to peck at) broken up into pieces, ...

Can't testify for Naturose (I think it smells yum myself though) since I don't use it all that frequently but all the algae-shrimp we have LOVE spirulina. The powdered stuff floats so you can see the shrimp hanging from the water surface or any plants up there for the bigger shrimp. I use spirulina ...

All our shrimp are in shrimp/snail only tanks and no one hides ever. They're out cruising around day and night, coming to the surface when they see me approach (the bringer of all things good and tasty).

We have planaria in lots of our shrimp tanks and leeches (they move differently from planaria) and what look like blackworms or tubifex worms--all spontaneously generated as far as I'm concerned since we didn't put any of those things in there). The planaria are kind of cute with their arrow heads a...

Our water here has the same stuff you listed and we have to use really good dechlorinators on the tap water for the fish (makes the water reek too). What we've been doing, since we do weekly water changed in all the fish tanks, is siphoning off the clear mid-water from the fish tanks into clean wate...
