New Tank/Habitat!!!
I'm so excited that my upgraded tank is up and running! Thanks to those of you who gave advice on the weird stringy slime I had in the first week or so after initial setup. As you predicted - it went away after about a day. I added rocks and coral, and ~1 week later had some good algae growth going....

Re: Stringy Algae?
I can't even seem to really touch it - it just disintegrates. I'm waiting a few more weeks anyways to cycle and get good algae going before I add shrimps, so I'll wait and see. Hopefully it will also go away on its own.
Thank you!

Stringy Algae?
I am starting up my 3rd 'opae tank right now to upgrade my babies. :) My 20 shrimp from Mustafa 2.5 years ago have turned into several hundred in a 2.7gal and a .9gal - pretty much don't feed either of those (maybe 2x/year?) and they are all doing great and having babies left and right. (The tiny ta...

Re: New Tank, Some Questions
Thanks all! As those weird larvae became bigger, it was super apparent that they were mosquitoes (and super gross). I was able to get a fine-mesh net and scoop them out carefully over a couple of days - making sure not to scoop my precious opae larvae! All has been good and mosquito-free since then....

Re: New Tank, Some Questions
Crap-tastic. Yeah, that's what I had been thinking based on further research. Ok, so mosquitoes - I've covered the strip that the tank lid didn't originally cover. It's not air-tight, but I think it will keep out adult mosquitoes. I've ordered a small dip net with much smaller mesh (my current one w...

Re: New Tank, Some Questions
Two photos of the setup, berried shrimp, and algae (still cannot get photos of the tiny white worms/larvae).

Re: New Tank, Some Questions
Update (and question): To review, I started with 30 shrimp, and 10 snails in January. I've got berried shrimp! Noticed the first in early May. I think I got up to 5 or 6 berried. I saw the first larvae on May 30. Now there are a few tiny shrimp, and I think 2-3 more have released larvae, with at lea...

Re: New Tank, Some Questions
Thank you both so much! I was debating, but may get some snails after all. I was thinking about making a 1 gallon tank for my office (so I can enjoy 'opae'ula all day at work and at home). ;) So perhaps I could put most of the snails in the big tank, but a few of the snails in the 1 gal and move may...

New Tank, Some Questions
Aloha everyone, I've been avidly reading these discussion threads and have found them extremely helpful! I recently set up an opae'ula tank and have a few questions I was hoping to get some thoughts on ... I have a fair amount of brown algae growing on the sides of the tank and getting worse. I know...
