Hawaii opae ula in situ
All, I’m on the Big Island of Hawaii and today visited a very nice population of opae ula. The pond has no fish, fortunately, and the surface has a thin veneer of algae. Here are some underwater pics for your enjoyment. At the adjacent pond is a nice information plaque, also attached here. You’re we...

Re: WTH Snails?
They’re parthenogenetic, so can produce clones, and can reproduce sexually.

Re: What exactly do they eat?
“Feeding cheliped setae are of two types, serrated setae that scrape the substrate surface and filamentous setae that collect the loosened food materials or act as filters. The shrimp are primarily microphagous grazers that scrape the surface of the algal-cyanobacterial crust on pool substrates. Thi...

Re: Salinity level
Salinity in my two-gallon jar is kept at about 1.0143 (19 ppt). It was initially populated with 40 individuals 2.5 years ago and reproduction began about three months later, and has continued regularly ever since.

Re: Worm cap
That’s a nice photo of a group of worms called branciobdellids (Branchiobdellida). They are closely related to earthworms and leeches, all of which are members of the Class Clitellata (Phylum Annelida - the segmented worms). Branciobdellids live commensally on crayfish and are harmless.

Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?
It's useful to understand that 'cycling' is a process that establishes the necessary bacterial flora for metabolizing ammonia to nitrites, then to nitrates. While it might be possible to circumvent the time needed for this process by limiting the number of shrimp initially introduced, it's better to...

Can you post some photos of the hydroids? They do have nematocysts, but have you seen them capture shrimp?

Re: ...but, brackish water plants do exist in anchialine pools
The alga in the referenced thread appears to a species of Batophora. I’ve seen it in hypersaline pools in the Bahamas, but don’t know how well it grows in estuarine waters.

You might want to look into what sediment depth is required for the root system.

Hydroids shouldn’t cause any problems. Hydra are freshwater only.

Re: white worms: friend or foe?
They could be marine flatworms (either planarians or polyclads). There also are marine segmented worms, called polychaetes, and some of which are microscopic. In either case, they will present no problems.
