Re: 11 months in and still no babies

I also agree with the other comments about not feeding if you have visible patches of algae.

Over feeding pollutes the water and stresses the shrimp.

Re: Finally! The Opae has come

Beautiful tank!

I would recommend that you add a seashell or piece of coral; that will help prevent the water from going acidic.
Like you, I also used real ocean water. (However, I mixed mine with distilled water, not tap water.)

Re: Questions for the Experts!

Mike.d, I bought seawater from a local aquarium shop. Buying that water was easier than mixing my own; I'm incredibly lazy. They get their water from out on the Monterey Bay, where there isn't much water pollution, and I think they filter it to some extent. It definitely had life in it (I used the s...

Re: Questions for the Experts!

For salt water, I used 50% the salinity of seawater, and my shrimp are thriving. (I used actual seawater, mixed with an equal quantity of distilled water.) Your collected sea shells should be great. River rocks are probably fine... unless they contain copper deposits or some other harmful metal. I a...

Too bad. :(

If it were me, I'd remove the logs and replace about 80‰ of the water. Good luck!

Re: Opae population limit in a 1 1/2 gallon bowl?

I gave away most of the original adults we had purchased from Mustafa, because a relative wanted a shrimp tank, too. (I hear they're having shrimp babies in their new home, too.) So, most of my shrimp are still juveniles. I don't know if there will be enough algae to support them all when they're fu...

Re: Opae population limit in a 1 1/2 gallon bowl?

I'd like to know, too! From the algae, it looks like your bowl has plenty of nutrients, so I'm sure 20 would be fine. The problem is, it won't stay at 20 for long. About 9 months ago, I started with 10 shrimp in a 1 gallon bowl, similar to yours. Just for fun, I fed them one single speck of fish foo...

Re: Questions before I start

1. I'm not sure, sorry. Is the seal airtight? I know that some amount of air exchange is important (that's a big problem with "ecospheres"), but I don't know how much. 2. We started with 10 shrimp in a bowl that's about 1 gallon, and it was plenty. (Since then, they've been breeding like c...

Re: My opae berried, I want to know how?

I wouldn't worry too much about topping off evaporated water disturbing the shrimp. I have to add water every week or two, and they don't seem to notice. In nature, they get pretty much the same experience whenever it rains. What seems to bother them is water movement, which probably feels like a pr...

Re: My opae berried, I want to know how?

There are still gas building up just surface and it made my chaeto float too, nothing serious.
My guess is that this gas now making your chaeto float is probably just oxygen produced by the chaeto and by microscopic algae.

For what it's worth, I've seen biofilm like that in a freshwater aquarium which was healthy (but maybe overfed).

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

I'm assuming that just because it's safe for an aquarium, doesn't necessarily mean it's safe for this type of environment? If it's safe for saltwater aquariums, it should be fine. now with the new lid system, I can open it up and actually put food in there from time to time Yeah, but remember, it l...

Re: ...Are my shrimp happy?

What kind of sand do you have? If it's argonite, that's great, but if not, I'd worry about your water going acidic. (I'm no expert, but I'd guess that a tiny bit of tanic acid will leech out of the bamboo.) If you don't have argonite sand, another way to buffer the acidity would be to add some piece...

I think the air bubbles are probably oxygen produced by algae.
