Cellophane
I broke the glass cover on my tank today. It will probably be a while until I can replace it, as it is a vase rather than a rectangular tank. I put cellophane over the top. Will the plastic hurt the shrimp if it stays on for a while? I do have a bubbler in the tank and have left a small opening by t...

Re: 1st Berried Shrimp! What to expect?
I've found they don't always hatch at once. It may take several days. They do seem to be hanging more loosely at times when they are close to hatching. My concern was that they'd be eaten but, because of their exoskeleton, they are safe from the other shrimp. My first few batches hid when they left ...

Re: New shrimp
The advice to place it near a window is good, but only for indirect (shaded light). You do not want it in direct sunlight, as that may overheat the water. Read (and reread) the how to set up a tank info on this website, especially since you've been doing it and it's not all new and overwhelming anym...

Re: Setup new tank for Opae Ula Shrimps, my shrimps died
I lost a lot the first time, too. It was devastating. You cycle the light and dark to allow algae and good bacteria to form so the opae will have a food and oxygen source. Several weeks - or until you have visible algae, microfilm. I put a few in and waited 2 weeks. When they seemed to be doing well...

Re: Starting from Scratch
I don't have a heater, so it's ambient room temperature. I'm a worry wart so I have a thermometer on my sink, and a thermometer inside the tank. PetSmart told me that inside the tank is more accurate than the stick-on type. Over the summer, with A/C, the tank ranged from 76-79. Right now, it's about...

Re: How to carry opae ulas on a plane?
Between countries, there are likely more issues. Check with the airline and with customs. They're fussy about plants & animals due to disease control. I'm guessing that a small amount for a personal tank won't be a problem, but I don't know. Point out that if they got loose, they'd die because o...

Re: How to carry opae ulas on a plane?
About 20 years ago, I used to fly with my parrot, and before that hamsters. Security doesn't care about the animals as long as there is no safety issue for the plane. It's the airline who wants to know what's flying. I would call the airline (no name) for information to see if they'd have a problem ...

Re: Shrimp and aquarium dummy
I've been told, by this site and by friends with tanks, that some fish will breed beyond tank capacity but that these shrimp will not. They can happily live with a large number of them in close proximity.

Re: Starting from Scratch
I've had great breeding results at 1.010. Make sure you keep distilled water on hand to replace any evaporation. Remember that the salt won't evaporate, so you'll only replace the lost water with distilled. I also keep some mixed water on hand if there's a need, emergent or not. It once looked a lit...

Re: Starting from Scratch
I don't know about the salt; a local reef store mixes water for me at 1.010 salinity so I don't know/use any. I used a different CaribSea product, but same brand. I have about 3.5 gallons of water in my tank (a covered glass vase). I have 1 nerite snail (from PetSmart). I gave away 2 other snails be...

Re: Salinity and breeding question
I added shrimp from Mustafa last March, and I had my first larvae in June. They've continued to breed like crazy. My salinity is set at 1.010. I add distilled water when I notice the water line shows. Temp has been as high as 78 and is about 68 now. They have LOTS of places to hide. I feed them 1-2 ...
