Re: My new setup (newbie to brackish tanks)
Does anyone know what the flake like things are in the tank? There are some in the top right of the upright picture above.

Re: Setup suggestions needed for newbie
I tried to acclimate a Java Fern when I first set up my tank by slowly bringing the salinity up from fresh water. Java Fern will not grow in the salinity the shrimp do best in. I removed my java fern and returned it to fresh water when algae was growing on it (never a good sign).

Re: opae ula vs. Metabetaeus Lohena eating routines? different?
I had no idea about these and would love to do a tank of them! From what I briefly read online, they do feed on the Opae, so I would definitely keep them separately.

Re: My new setup (newbie to brackish tanks)
Thank you!
Attached are a couple of more recent pictures, a feeding and typical view of the tank.
I've noticed some small snails now so they are also reproducing too!

Re: Opae Ula 29 Gallon Tank
I have a 10 gallon tank, and is hard to see the shrimp at first, but once they start reproducing that no longer will be an issue. My current population is very high. I do not think you need a pump regardless of size of the tank once you introduce the shrimp. Also the pump may stress the shrimp, whic...

Re: Container Cleaning
Except for cyanobacteria which is terrible to have in any tank, most algae is safe for the tank and the shrimp will feed off it. If you are feeding you are adding nutrients into a closed system (which speeds up algae growth) and offering your shrimp arguably 'better' food which they eat instead of t...

You can always use crazy glue gel - I have used it with success after reading it is safe in reef tanks (used to attach coral to rocks, etc.)

Re: Container Cleaning
I would not feed additional food, since algae is present they have all they need. Also in such a small container, there is almost no room for error in overfeeding.

Re: My new setup (newbie to brackish tanks)
I fed the shrimp for the 1st time ever. It was a very small amount (!) of powdered spirulina which I sprinkled over the water's surface. Lots of shrimp came up to the surface to feed!

Re: Tank maintenance
An old credit card or gift card works great to scrape algae buildup off the tank glass / plexiglass.

To err on the side of caution, I'd remove it. A turkey baster should do it.

Re: How many shrimp/snails is too many?
I've seen videos - where they were extremely densely populated. My Tank is quite dense and seems that the reproduction has not slowed a bit.

Re: My new setup (newbie to brackish tanks)
Picture of the entire tank. The Shrimp and snails have done a remarkable job of consuming almost all the algae.
Still haven't fed them anything at all!

What are you using for the upgraded work tank? I really like the tall cylinder tank!
