Re: My Ecospherians are 21
That's amazing. I kinda agree with the person who suggested that they get a bigger home. You could increase their home in stages by slowly adding water from your other tank to their own water a bit at a time (and replenishing the tank water a bit at a time, with the right salinity of course). And ma...

Re: Calcium for water buffering
I think the barnacle shells should be enough. As far as I understand, you don't need a huge amount of calcium carbonate to get the buffering benefits for your tank.

Re: Safe decor for super shrimp bowl
Don't put any wood in -- it can decompose and mess up your water, especially in such a small environment. The only live plants that are sure to be safe are the macro algae (chaetomorpha) and the little algae balls sold on this site. You can also put in sea shells (they help buffer water pH), but onl...

That looks cool! I love sphere tanks. My second tank is a sphere -- 5 gallons, glass. It was originally a beverage dispenser. I'm currently cycling it. It has visible algae and snails, so the shrimp are going in pretty soon.

Re: Overpopulation?
It's my understanding that they're self-regulating in terms of population growth, which is yet another thing that makes them such amazing critters to keep as pets. I've got a baby boom going on in my tank, too. I was surprised, because in years past they've tended to stop breeding in the colder mont...

Re: Snails or shrimp first?
Snails go in first, is what I've always heard. They help the tank cycle and get the water better prepared for the shrimp.

Re: My latest (7th) Opae Ula tank
Very cool! I have a "thing" for glass spheres, as you might be able to see from one of my two tanks. (I also keep a marimo in a jar with a spherical cork lid next to it.) I had to re-do this tank, so it has just started cycling. No shrimp live in there yet. It's five gallons.

Cool tank! Looks good.
Yes, I'd gently dump all the water from the ecosphere into the new digs.

Does this look like hair algae?
I put some chaeto algae that was purchased from this site into my newish tank. After a while, though, I saw that a different type was growing. It's finer, less wiry, and tends to anchor to surfaces, unlike the free-floating chaeto. Is this hair algae on the left? (I've contrasted it with the chaeto ...

Re: Moving
Yes, I'd drain it down to a few inches (but obviously keep the water) and take out anything that can move, like rocks. But if you have some chaeto algae or something similar they could hold onto for the ride, I'm sure they'd appreciate it. I moved a tank and I put the whole thing in a big box and st...
