NEVER use a hose to clean your filter. Drain your water changes into a 5 gallon bucket and squeeze out your filters in that. Hoses will kill all your good bacteria and kill your shrimp. If you are bonkers like me, you'll save that water and use it to grow green water for your filter feeders. I wasn...

I just read the updated FAQ on filter feeders. I really want the vampire shrimp, they are fascinating and gorgeous. it says: The best food for filter shrimp are the micro-organisms that are blown out of the output of a well-established canister filter. A large enough hang-on power filter might work,...

thanks badflash, that looks pretty good, I am a fan of external filters vs internal. Unless I get other input I think I'll go with this. :)

Filter recommendations for a 46 gallon tank

It's been a while since I've been here, because of a knee injury I have not yet replaced the horrible Seaclear II tank I have with a "real" tank. But I'm recovered enough now that I expect to buy the new tank and filter(s) in May/June. I regret the Seaclear and the shrimp I killed due to m...

thanks guys, I'm not too expert on identifying shrimps myself, appreciate the help. I too thought they looked more like Neocaridina but they are rare. Unfortunately the person has not posted a response to anyones questions or provided any new pics. The poster has made some other statements without a...

Someone claiming to breed Amano Shrimp in Freshwater

over on the Dwarf Puffer forum a user is saying she has amanos breeding in "hard" fresh water. I told her we'd all want to know if this is happening and how and I asked for pics, she posted these. here is one: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q279/Boxermom_2006/20070126_0082a.jpg and 2: ...

Pinky is dead

 my pink vampire shrimp died today. He's the one that was very weak after moulting over a week ago, he seemed fine lately so I was surprised. Meanwhile the asian filter feeder I got from Petsmart moulted a week ago and is very active and the other vamp is fine. I'm getting worried about my aqua...

Filter recommendations, was Replace Tank

Since only Frugalfish noticed and responded to my filter question, thought I'd repost. (thanks Frugal!) Thanks to all for how to make the move. Now I need to research the best filtration for the new tank. I keep a pretty heavily planted tank, it is "landscaped" so I don't want a filter tha...

Check Mustafa's shrimp varieties page to see what water parameters you need for these guys. You should be able to keep them in a tank that is very small, 1-2 gallons. I don't know much more not having kept these guys. One question, do you know how to open the ecosphere without trauma? I have one tha...

Mustafa, I hope you or someone else as knowledgeable will correct the wikipedia info! the folks that host it know things are sometimes put there that are wrong and are good about allowing corrections. I'm sure none of them have a clue about shrimp!

Thanks to all for how to make the move. Now I need to research the best filtration for the new tank. I keep a pretty heavily planted tank, it is "landscaped" so I don't want a filter that will interrupt the view :) . Mustafa recommends in an article "the most suitable filters for the ...
