Re: tiny worms in my tank ):

If they're swimming like that, they're most likely harmless. Planaria will crawl along the glass kind of like slugs. I had an outbreak in my cherry shrimp tank that proved to be just the harmless type. Outbreaks of Detritus worms are most often the result of overfeeding. There are always some presen...

Re: tiny worms in my tank ):

If they have a round body, they are probably just harmless detritus worms. If they are flat with a diamond shaped "head" at one end, they are planaria which potentially can be dangerous to the shrimp.

Re: Almost ready

Do you think my tank is ready if it is showing between 0.25 and 0.5 ppm nitrite and no ammonia? There is brown algae present.

I'm thinking about ordering the shrimp and when they arrive, changing out half of my water to lower nitrates and then putting the shrimp in.

Re: New shrimp

The water does have salt in it. The reason you use distilled to replace evaporation is so your salt content does not increase. What evaporates is, in essence, distilled water. The salt and other minerals do not evaporate and the shrimp do not consume it. You don't need to add any salt. If the contai...

Re: New shrimp

If the container gets enough light for algae to grow, that is what the shrimp feed on. Without some algae they will slowly starve. You should keep it near a window. Maybe a very small amount of a plant based food like veggie flakes added every 3 weeks would be good but you have to be careful not to ...

Re: Starting the opae journey!

The wait is definitely tough. I'm still waiting for my cycle to finish. I still have Nitrites but the Ammonia is gone so it should finish soon. There is some brown algae and the macro algae sometimes pearls and floats. It's been somewhere between 3 weeks and a month since the brackish water went in.

Re: Almost ready

Okay, yesterday I saw test results of 0.5 Ammonia, 2.0 Nitrite, and 20 Nitrate. The cycle is progressing since 3 days before the Ammonia was higher and the Nitrites lower. I changed out 50% of the water with distilled mixed with Instant Ocean at half strength. I'll see how it looks Friday. There is ...

Re: New Belgian opae ula owner!

That is unusual for Nerites. Every one I have had devours the brown stuff. That's in fresh water though. Maybe they behave differently in brackish or maybe the algae is a different type.

Re: 1st Berried Shrimp! What to expect?

Yes, benthic means bottom dwelling and applies to the fully formed shrimp. The larval stage will float around for a while. Some shrimp, such as Cherry shrimp, skip the larval stage and hatch as miniature versions of the adults. It seems that the ones who spend their entire life cycle in fresh water ...

Re: Almost ready

I would think that not having a filter on the tank would make overfeeding more of a problem. Most of the beneficial bacteria in a "normal" aquarium is in the filter and the water is constantly flowing through it so any ammonia from decaying matter or inhabitant waste products would be proc...
