That could be possible tooSuper Jess wrote: ↑Sat Jun 06, 2020 7:40 pm Looks like she's growing some eggs! That's where the ovaries are located. When the "spot" gets bigger we refer to the shrimp as being "saddled."

Re: Shrimp has spot on back/eggs?
That's just it's stomach that's full of food. The dark stripe is the gut or intestine. Being full like that is a very good sign.

Re: No visible algae?
My tank is close to a year old now and I have no visible algae either. There is a coating of biofilm on everything though. The macroalgae has grown some but really not that much. The shrimp are reproducing like crazy right now. I only feed a small amount of spirulina powder mixed with the distilled ...

Re: cycling issues
Be careful with Hikari foods. They contain copper sulfate. Omega One foods do not. I think the best food for these shrimp is pure powdered spirulina algae which can be found online and is inexpensive. I put a little in every other week and the shrimp go crazy hunting it down. I just mix the amount t...

Re: Evaporation and Adding Water
I always top off with distilled. Every once in a while, maybe 90 days or so, I remove a few ounces of the water in the tank and replace it with some freshly mixed brackish. I just do it to replenish some of the minerals that may have been depleted. I put back exactly the same amount as I take out. M...

Yes they need the light/dark cycle to be really comfortable.

Re: 4 gallon Bio Orb Crystal Looking Ball
Most likely oxygen or co2 produced by the plant life. The biofilm in the tank can form a thin slime coating that makes them last longer.

You've resurrected a 16 year old thread. You might be better off starting a new one.

Re: Ideal Tank Balance
As far as I know. The shrimp will only reproduce to a level that can be supported by available food sources. From what I have seen people say, they will self regulate the population. I haven't had mine long enough to personally confirm that but that's what is said. I have read a scientific study tha...

My API master test kit ammonia tests never show the exact same color as the 0 on the chart when testing any of my 4 tanks. They are always just slightly different. Different meaning never as bright yellow as the cards show. I would say that as long as there is no greenish tint, you are good to go.

Re: Attempt #1 = Fail :(
Okay, but are you saying that your shipping bags are completely full of water with no air in them at all? I don't recall seeing that when I got my shrimp. Yes the spheres are sealed but there is at least 1/3 of their volume being air. Yes, full of water. Maybe a large air bubble in there. There's s...

Re: Attempt #1 = Fail :(
If the sea fan was decomposing, the problem wouldn't be bad bacteria. The problem would be ammonia and/or nitrite levels that become toxic. I guess that could happen but hasn't for me. The macroalgae will absorb some of the ammonia as a nutrient but it will be good bacteria that will completely neut...

Re: Attempt #1 = Fail :(
I have sea fan in my one gallon tank and have never changed the water in 11 months. I have not had a single shrimp death. My population has at least doubled. I believe it can only pose a problem if the dead coral tissue is not completely removed from it. I still think the main problem is the lack of...
