Re: Experimenting with Coral?

It's worth a shot. My thought would be that you might try sort of an intermediate salinity. Opae ula are usually kept at about half of normal marine salinity, so I wonder if you might have success keeping both GSP and opae ula at about 3/4 normal marine salinity? I've tried keeping opae ula at marin...

Re: "Cycled" and old tank always at 0.25 ppm ammonia

Since you never got an answer:
This is because the API test kit usually displays 0.25ppm ammonia. You don't actually have ammonia.

Re: Shipping temps for these lil guys?

They did just fine! Got to their new home day before yesterday. I just forgot to update this until now. No heat pack, just newspaper insulation, and they were allowed to warm back up to room temp before being acclimated and transferred. Normal levels of in-a-bag activity all the way.

Shipping temps for these lil guys?

A friend of mine has an opae tank set up, but doesn't have the budget to afford shrimp and shipping, so I want to send them some of my shrimp as a gift. The temperatures in their area will be getting down to the 40s and 50s when I want to ship. I don't want to wait for it to warm up, because once it...

Re: Known safe lava rock?

It's not critters I'm worried about, it's chemical or other material contaminants. Those are a lot harder to get rid of than critters. I'd imagine critters would die from the salty water, anyway.

Tank upgrade plan

Long story short, I have an empty 30 gallon tank, and a full, cycled 3 gallon tank with some shrimp, macroalgae, and coral rock. Since the coral rock is cycled, and has all the bacteria and algae needed to support my current shrimp, can I just transfer everything over to the bigger tank? My plan is ...

Known safe lava rock?

Where have y'all bought your nice-sized (fist size or so) black lava rock that turned out to be safe? I need a bunch for a 30gal tank I'm setting up. If you look on any planted tank forum, everyone will tell you that the rocks aren't safe to use because they might have contaminants. Everywhere that ...

Re: 30gal Opae tank?

I'm going to get a heater, and just for insurance, I'm also getting one of those shutoff probe things that turns off whatever is plugged in if it gets past a certain temperature range. That way, if it fails, it'll fail in the direction that results in chilled shrimp and not cooked shrimp. Even if th...

Re: Bug or Worm in Tank

How sure are you that those are worms? They almost look like incredibly tiny shrimp. How do they move? Anything buzzing, flying, or otherwise off a solid surface isn't a worm, it's likely a copepod or maybe a baby shrimp. They won't come out of the water. They're aquatic, they'd die. Probably they'r...

Re: 30gal Opae tank?

I haven't fed them yet. There's plenty of algae for them to eat, and there's so few of them. I didn't think it was needed. Does anyone know if opae need to be physically kept from accessing a heater? They won't stand on it and get burnt, will they? I'd hope they'd have the sense to keep away, and I ...

Re: 30gal Opae tank?

Okay, so it's unlikely that being in the low 60s all the time is stopping them from breeding? I wonder what it is, then. Maybe the light cycle is wrong.

Re: 30gal Opae tank?

The smaller a volume of water, the riskier it is to put a heater in. There's less temperature inertia, and many heaters are too powerful. A lot of the heaters that are small enough are cheaply made and prone to breakage. It's not that it can't be done, per se, only that it's riskier than I'd prefer ...

Re: 30gal Opae tank?

I'm actually disinclined to scrub the rocks at all. They don't stink, so it's not like there's a dead crab in there or something, and anything small caught in the gaps will rot away while the tank cycles. Besides, my current tank was set up with rock from this same beach (washed up into the sun and ...

Re: Ecosphere Empathy

I don't know if you got a reply about this yet, but Legos are safe for aquariums as long as they haven't been contaminated by other substances. People like to use them for things sometimes.

30gal Opae tank?

Hello all, I have a Biocube 29 standing empty. I don't know the exact size of it, but it's somewhere in the 25-30 gallon range. It's a cube, about 18", and I want to fill it with shrimp. As of right now, I have a cycled 3.5gal shrimp tank. I've had it up since January 2018, and I haven't had an...
