Tank #2 *new setup*

Here we go again. The itch to setup a new tank got the better of me. Not sure what to do, I remembered I absolutely loathe water changes. So a new Upae Ula tank it is. Pulled an existing 6 gallon tank out of storage and bought some lava rock. A few rocks from the established tank and now the waiting...

Re: New set up - is lava rock 100% necessary?

The advantage of lava rock is, it’s adding a lot of surface area for biofilm to develop. In my opinion, the base Rock you have in your tank will serve the same purpose, so you should be good. Just be patient and let the tank mature before adding shrimps. Good luck

Re: first time setup for Opae Ula

3 1/2 years and the tank is going strong. One move and some redecorating. I have never fed them, just occasionally topped off water. There are always some floaters out and about. Easiest aquarium ever :D The macro algae fall apart, what you see is what is left. It’s not growing but it isn’t dying ei...

Thank you... :)

Hardly a secret if it’s all laid out in the guide on this website

In my option; best way to success is resisting the urge to tamper with the system. Setup and forget.

Re: Re-cycling a tank?

The beneficial bacteria populate on surfaces like rocks and substrate , so a water change won’t break the cycle. I assume you did the change immediately though and didn’t let the tank dry out.

They are finally here :)

They are out and about, swimming and grazing.
Most of them are nicely red colored.

Re: first time setup for Opae Ula

It’s coming along great. I didn’t moved the macro algae but I think you are right and it needed adjustment to the new environment. It has grown quite a bit in a month and a half now.
Tank is ready for shrimps I guess.
I have put in the order today and looking forward to give them a new home. :D

Re: first time setup for Opae Ula

Thank you for your kind words. I will update as it progresses. I drilled a 1/4 hole in the lava rock and threaded them on an acrylic stick. All together glued with hot glue. The macro algae is now in for a couple days but it doesn’t seem to look healthy. Attached a pic, is it looking normal or off? ...
