Lowering Salinity?

Hi everyone! The other day, I measured my salinity for the 1st time out of curiosity. I was surprised to see it was at 25 ppt or 1.018 sg. I know that they can survive this salinity, especially since they have for the past 2 years, but it seems to be way above their ideal range. Since I've had them,...

"Cycled" and old tank always at 0.25 ppm ammonia

Hi everyone! For the past 3 months, I have been cycling a 3 gallon tank for my shrimp. I rinsed out the tank thoroughly before adding substrate, calcium carbonate pebbles, lava rocks, macroalgae, and the supershrimp moss ball, all of which I bought from the store here. I used distilled water and the...

Re: HELP!!! Shrimp swimming on side?

Oh sorry for double post but I fully agree about the natural light. It seems way better for the shrimp, temperature control and algae growth if you live somewhere with enough light. And yes, mix your salt measure your salinity and add it to your tank with sand and the eggshell! Thanks for all of yo...

Re: HELP!!! Shrimp swimming on side?

Hi, any updates on your shrimp? Did you set up a hospital tank? Hi there! I did the 90% water change like Mustafa suggested. I've been testing the water everyday. There is still ammonia in the tank, so I've been doing 50% water changes every other day. The sick shrimp is still alive. He can still m...

Re: HELP!!! Shrimp swimming on side?

Thanks for your reply! The tank is 1 gallon. I set it up almost a year ago using distilled water. I bought the substrate, calcium carbonate pebbles, macroalgae, and supershrimp salt from the PetShrimp store. The only thing in the tank not from the PetShrimp store is their cave, which I bought from a...

HELP!!! Shrimp swimming on side?

Hi all. Today, I turned on my shrimp light this morning as usual, and my one shrimp was on the glass and seemed completely fine. A few minutes later, he swam to the top of the water. When he swam back down, it looked like he was holding onto something. I don't know how to describe it; it just looked...

Re: Opae Ula having seizures

Hello Erallie, I've only kept my shrimp for about 7 months now, so I don't know for sure what's going on with your shrimp or if there's too much salt. I do know that they can tolerate a wide range of salinities, but someone more knowledgeable will have to step in about the salt. What I do know, howe...

Re: Help-Ammonia in tank

NewShrimp - first buy a liquid test kit for ammonia. It is more accurate than the test strips. But, assuming you have an ammonia spike, yes, you will need to mix more brackish water using distilled water and Instant Ocean. I think you should do a 25% water change and then a day later do another 25%...

Help-Ammonia in tank

Hello all, 7 months ago, I freed 2 opae ula from an ecosphere and put them in a 1 gallon tank. They were very happy and always out swimming around. I had to leave for college, and the 2 shrimp stayed at my house. My mom has been filling up the tank when the water evaporates with distilled water, and...

Re: Adding More Friends?

I have a one gallon glass tank with 19 shrimps and it honestly could hold about 50 without being too crowded. My biggest concern since you will be gone is water evaporation. So get those guys some friends! The more you have the more fun it is to watch them. Ok, great! I will definitely get them mor...

Adding More Friends?

Hi everyone! I currently have a 1 gallon tank with 2 shrimp I rescued from an ecosphere. They're doing amazing in their new home. Since it's just the 2 of them, I was thinking about whether I should buy more shrimp or add snails, or even both. I do enjoy having just the 2 of them right now since I c...

Re: Shrimp has spot on back/eggs?

Thanks for all of the responses! I will keep watching the spot and see what happens. Whether eggs are forming or not, I'm glad that the shrimp are doing well in their new home. :D

Shrimp has spot on back/eggs?

Hi everyone! About a month ago, I opened up my ecosphere and moved my 2 shrimp into their new, 1 gallon home. They are doing great so far! Anyways, 2 days ago, I went to turn off their light for the night, and I noticed that the one shrimp had a visible dark circle-like spot on its back. It's never ...

Re: Opening an Ecosphere

I think they would be settled within a day but I’m no expert. Their food source is actually biofilm and the little critters that grow everywhere in your tank. I believe the algae is just for looks and maybe helps a bit with water parameters Thanks for the info! They definitely do seem settled in no...

Re: Opening an Ecosphere

I used an x-acto knife (narrow knife blade) which worked pretty good. I wouldn’t worry about it exploding never heard of such a thing. Once the seals off just hold it in the the tank till the shrimp swim out is my advice. Also don’t use the hair algae that comes in those things in the new tank. Tha...
